There is a program called spybot that you can download and use. it is free and you can donate to the guy if you want. use it and keep it updated. it will take care of a lot of that. I can tell you that most of the ---- popups come up pnce you have been to one of those sites. I have been on the net since long before it was cool and I can tell you i have never had ---- popups cause i never go to those sites to begin with.
another thing you can do is use another browser. AVANT is a good one that blocks popups very well. you can also get that free.
just type either one in any search engine like google and you can download them from their websites.

if you use AOL get the 9.0 version. it has a popup blocker. do you have a DSL or any other high speed internet line? if you do you many want to invest in a firewall.

I think PopUp Stopper is the best...available as free download at www.download.com Type in "popup stopper" in the search box.
I generally use the Google toolbar with advanced features, which includes a pretty good popup stopper:) Less hassle than enabling a program. BTW, I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the Google toolbar. It's the best thing since chunky peanut butter:) Available at www.google.com, go to the "tools" section.

 Is this computer brand new or previously owned?? If it has been used by someone else before you(even in the store) then everything from the previous user(s) remains on the hard drive and unfortunately the only was to get rid of it is to replace the hard drive. Also, do you ever go in chat rooms? I know that on AOL at least as soon as you go in a chat room, even if it has nothing to do with ---/---- in any way, you sart getting IM's and e-mails from ---- sites, this may be a reason? Pop up blockers do help though, I'd try one. GL.

check out ad-aware by lavasoft. Free to use unless you want the premium which costs $ to register.
The free version works quite well IMO.

someone, on that computer now, or in the past has been to either those sites or sites affiliated with the ones where you get your pop ups from
as mentioned by polar pooch, go to download.com and get
adaware and pop-up stopper, both are available for free there and work great
also, clean your history and interent files and cookies in your internet properties(located in the control panel)
this wont help with the pop ups, but more ram in your case would be a very good thing(if the system could handle it that is) It would help with the freezing too.
what do you have for an antivirus program? if you dont have one, or want a good one, while at www download.com, type in avast and download their home version, it is great and easy to use. PLUS it is completely free to the home user, it must be registered but it is FREE. Norton is the only other one i will even consider, but you need to keep the newest version of it and that costs like 30-40 bucks EVERY YEAR. I still ike the way avast works better, i can get norton, solomons, mcafee, panda and kasperski for free and the only one i keep using is avast.
