I'm starting a 90 gal. Have been running (no fish) for one month. CC substrate ( I read that it's an error/LS is better). Anyway, my filtration is the best (!!): 2 Fluval 405 opposing each other at each end on the tank. The water movement is 2 Maxijet 1200 powerhead. A Prizm skimmer is doing a super job.
Get the compact fluorescent light fixture. I made the mistake to buy first a NO fluorescent....
My problem is my bas well water (20 ppm of nitrate). I have an brown algae bloom.
I'm working on this. Still NO FISH. BE PATIENT.
Good luck. Gerard

Gerard, do you have some pictures of your tank? dimensions of your tank too
I was wondering if just 1 fluval 405 can work fine or must be two
When you will be adding fish to your tank
Tnx

I'm glad I found this site. I'm getting an est. 75gallon tank from a coworker. They have cc in it now. I'm wondering if it's going to be a big deal to change it to live sand? I've read on here that live sand is better but nobody really said why. We are moving the tank about 45 miles. There are two fish in it now and several types of coral. The tank has been up and running for 4 years without any problems. I am needing some help on how to make this go smoothly. I did buy a book on saltwater tanks and read it but that only helps so much. I'm willing to take my time, I'm in no rush. Thanks

Manuel,
The oversized filtration system is always a plus. I learned from my goldfish experience (I still have a 10 gal goldfish tank). That's whi I went 2 Fluval. fiMore ltration, more water movement. No picture of my tank.

1.
Hi Ive bin doing this for a while from what Ive read and exp.the larger the tank the EZer it is to take care of as fare as the larger the water valume the EZr it can be to take care of keeping in mind that 50gal. tank is not exactally small so 50gal, or 100gal, are both just fine. Just try to keep in mind that you will probly want to put (1 pound of cured live rock per each gal. of water in the tank like 50.gal tank would have 50 pounds of cured live rock cured live rock is about $7.00 a pound make shure U use cured live rock not uncured live rock if U use cured live rock U will have a lot less prob's and cured LR is only $1.00 more than uncured LR. :happyfish
Dimensions of tank the only seg. I can make is the larger the surface the more oxg. the tank gets this helps with every thing like filtration, oxgenashion, this helps to get rid of pesky nitrates thru the nitrogen cyl. oxg. being the key fule for nitrofication or the nitrogen cyl. other than that enless the top of the tank is really small like some really tall tanks that usally stand 5, to 6 foot tall get the tank that looks good to U!!! :cheer:
2. As fare as substrate goes Live Sand LS or Crushed Coral CC there R a lot of ideas and reserch on this I will say CC is the old school way and that LS is more the newr way of salt water keeping either way done corectly can b very binaficl LS has a lot more strong points like its softer so fish like blennys can dig down in the sand for fun and safty this is something they do in the ocean aswell and Mandarin fish use the LS as a extra source of food haveing a LS bed is very inportant in keeping Mandarin fish, Gobbis, Blennys and clown fish and really all my fish tend to make littel hole like homes in the sand to sleep in at night they sleep in the same hole in the sand evey night this can cute down on your fish's stress leval a lot Ive found long term aswell LS helps to filter the tank massavly as does CC studdy's from many Marianbiologist have found the binafits of LS are great for salt water fish breeding and fish life.
3. Filtraton a really good protein skimmer is all you should need as long as U have 1 pound of live rock per. gal. off tank water U can buy the rock slowly if needed and put it in the tank as U buy it if U decide to do this just dont over stock Ur tank with fish to fast because with out anuff live rock to filter the tank and haveing to many fish your nitrates can climb to fast do water changes when Ur nitrates climb to unsafe levels so fish will not stress and get sick!!! I use test strips to test my water test strips R more accurat than liuqid test and with test strips U can get the 1s that test nitrate, nitrite,PH,KH, and water hardness all on 1 test strip there EZr & faster and cheaper that haveing to buy 5 diffrent tests. and LS or CC as your substrate I use LS I love the # of binnafits it has for my fish, coral, anemoni, and tank...
4. Equipement / brands I use Rio, and powerhead brand power head pumps to push water from my sump tank to my top tank this is so there is nothing sucking water in my top tank for animonis to get stuck to this can kill them I would recomend a sump if for this reason alone and sumps have many other binafits!!! U can make a sump out of a 10,18,20,29,30 gal. or whatever tank for not to much $ brands use what ever U can get a good deal on most of the time is fine exept for your tank (Heater I would get 2 name brand Marianland or better heaters the reason to use 2 heaters is so if 1 of the heaters burns out breaks stops working so on you fish and all in the tank will not die like at night or when at work when you would not B at home to notice!!!) GOOD LUCK I hope I helped U a little Have lodes of fun!!!

I would go with a good skimmer and LR for filtration, jmo. And LS instead of CC, many because CC traps detris and can cause problems keeping water conditions stable. As for lighting, I would go with some T'5s or MH, you can keep anenomes with either lighting. Use RO water, never tap. Oh, and good luck!

O WOW thats really cool man!!! Ive moved my tank 3 times now
#1 Buy some very large rubber made flexable stourage type buckets 30 to 40gal Put a submurshible heater in each bucket and 1 good power head like a Rio brand are good and cheap buy a bucket of Marian salt at your local fish store I put a little more than 1/3cup of M salt per. gal of water in the bucket. Mix up 75 gal of salt water or more at the home where the tank is going to be moved to 1 to 2 days or even a week ahead of time to do a 100% water change to fill the tank with as soon as you have the tank set up where you want it remember you can not move the tank after you put the water in it salt water is about 8.5pounds per gal. so 75gal of salt water is 637.5 pounds and then you have the sand or CC & live rock!!! The 100% water change is critical for the survivel of the fish and all other liveing tank mates do not let any one talk you out of doing a 100% water change this is the most important part!!! I have done this many times U have to trust me...

#2 #1Rule when moveing salt water fish coral Is that they need good water movement for oxg.air not to much water move ment thou U dont want the fish or any thing your moveing to be fourced in cyrcle s in a bucket (like fish in a bucket being fourced a round and a round and a round this will kill them like from a power head in the bucket that is turned up to high) I would use high power air stone pumps for such a long distance trip you can power them useing a plug into the sigeret lighter trans fourmer plug Black&Decker sells 1 thats great for about $35.00 at Wall Mart
#3 I put all the fish in 1 bucket, the coral in a1 bucket, all the Live Rock in a large bucket or 2,3 as needed of its own aswell use the water from the tank to fill the buckets with use no more than 1/2 new salt water mixed with the old water for the long trip home the reson being if U use all new salt water you would have to aclumate all the fish in the buckets just to move them.
#4 I leave most my Live Sand in my tank while im moveing it You are not supost to do that it can crack the sides or bottom of the tank I was told I do it any way because if you dont you will have to recycle the tank this meaning you can not put any fish, coral, crabs so on back in the tank when you get the water back in the tank and the tank is set up at its new home U would have to Cycle the tank this takeing at least a day or two if U no what to do to speed up the cycleing prosses. With my tank I pump out allmost all the water and leave about 1, to 2 inchs of water in the tank to keep the live sand and micro inverts a live in the sand with Crushed Coral you can do the same thing.
#5 When you get home with the tank and fish, coral set the tank up where you want it put the CC you pulled out back in or I no you where asking about changeing it to live sand to do that is very EZ just instead of puting the CC you pulled out back in insted put a couple of bags of live sand may be about 2 -30 to 40 lbs bags live sand that comes in a bag with water in the bag is better puting the LS live sand on top of the 2 inch's of CC that is still in the tank if you decided to leave the 2inch's of CC in there if not and you decided to pull all of the CC out of the tank to be safe just clean & rinse out the tank and then put in about 2 to 5+ 30 to 40lbs bags of "LS" live sand in the clean tank live sand alows you to not have to recycle the tank just put in the LS about 4 to 8 inch's of LS depth and then the 100% new saltwater all in the tank (makeing shoure the water is at 82 degrees and a safe salinity) let the water clear up and start floteing all the fish, coral ,crabs so on make shoure to aclumate them all dont just flote them then dump them in!!!!
I hope I helped you if U need any thing my email is avalible on this site or just put it on here GOOD LUCK!!!!
