My Open brain is just now starting to recede from its hard skeleton. I have had it for about three weeks. I first started to notice something was wrong when its mouths were open wider than normal. I have been feeding it and had no problems until now. Today when I looked at it, I spotted what looked like a red worm with spines inside the mouth of the brain. This would be a bristle worm right? Anyway I have heard of these things eating clams from the inside out could this be the problem with the brain? And if so, what can I do to save it? Please Help!!!!!!!

If he is receding then dip em' Kent Marine makes a coral dip and it works. But as for the worm I do not have a clue???? If you can still see him get the little guy. I would use some tweezers or something.

I tried to get the little b$#%ard but it was too quick! No stores around here sells the Kent Marine stuff, but my friend has some I think, I hope!

More than likely a bristle worm. They are not easy to catch, especially when they have a place to hide.

I dipped my open brain coral and the bristle didn't like the Kent dip, and was squirming on the bottom of the bag. So, I dipped the coral and got rid of the worm all at the same time! Now, I just have to wait and see, it is going to be tough to bring it back! <img src="graemlins//angel.gif" border="0" alt="[angel]" />

unfortunately, bristle worms can cause some serious problems if they get inside of the polyps of a coral. they go there for obvious reasons....food! if you regularly feed your corals, this is something you may have to contend with. my buddy down at the LFS warned me of this and said that he's seen it take out an entire coral colony. it's great that the iodine dip removed the bristle worm...it was also beneficial because it will ward off any potential infection. good luck...open brains are relatively hardy and can come back from the seemingly impossible :) one other thing that i did (i know it's too late for you now) was when i got my live rock in, i make a supersaline solution using regular aquarium salt and soaked my rocks in it for 30 minutes before adding them to my aquarium. i heard that this is supposed to drive out any bristle worms and/or mantis shrimp as they can't stand the high salinity. hope this helps...for what it's worth :)

I caught a small bristle getting under the flesh on my red open brain causing it to recede a little. I did the dip and all is well now.
Good Luck.

Looks about the same, it had receded more than I thought though. The brain looks like an 8 and the left side looks ok on the top but in the inside pretty bad. On the right side there is the skin over the top pretty torn up, but the inside looks better than the left. I really need to get a digital camera!
I bought this brain and my elegance from the same LFS and my elegance started to recede and eventually died, and now the open brain is having problems. I don't think I will buy from them in the future! I know it isn't my tank because all my other corals are doing awesome.
