How can you tell if plate coral is dying. It hasn't looked the same since the power outage and now it looks like some dark waste coming out of it.The clown fish doesn't go near it anymore either.

The brown stuff is a zooanth... purge, which can be normal, but sounds like your coral is stressed and it will do that in response to that. If it isn't expanding its tentacles, its a bad sign. Do you feed it?

I have fed it krill, but the last few days it wouldnt accept it. Its tenacles havn't expanded for over a week now.

I don't think there is much you can do. IME when these corals start downhill, they don't come back very well. Keep your fingers crossed. Keep watching your water parameters and try to get it to eat. If you turn your circulation down for a bit, you can put some food on the mouth of the coral, and it may open up and take it.
Good Luck.

I was thinking about a water change tonight. Should I or will it stress the plate out? If so 10 % or 20 % water change ? Its been about 3 weeks since I did a 20 % water change. Last time I used Instant Ocean but I started with and for a about year I have been using Reef Crystals . Could that have messed up the plate coral ?Thanks

water changes never hurt any thing in your tank if done right with ro and predisolved salt for at least 24 hours it will benefit your system if anything try it and also check you calcium level and alkakinity

There has been word of problems when switching from one salt brand to another, especially between those two. Doesn't really make sense, unless they are antogonistic to one another, but it definately has caused some problems to reefers on this site. I would pick one brand and stick to it. Its a controversial subject, which one is better. I use Instant Ocean, if that helps...

The store only had instant ocean, and I started out with reef crystals because that was all they had at that time.I always had good luck with reef crystals so that is what I will only be using from now on. Thanks
