Hello All --
First of all -- I am not "new" per say to fish tanks or saltwater.. I used to have 3-55 gallon reef tanks but I had to get rid of them about 8 years ago.... Got the itch to start doing this again.... But, for space concerns, I decided to go with the biocube/nanocube route....
I have started a Coralife Biocube 14G... Live sand, live rock, and its been up and going for a week now-- added 6 hermits yesterday to start working off some of the fuzzies and random stuff around the tank and its working great thus far--- Now, I have just received my protein skimmer which is designed to fit into the 1st chamber of the filtration system -- well, if I put in the protein skimmer I cannot get the actual filter cartridge for the system -- Looks like I have to use either one or the other for filtration -- What risks do I have if i JUST use the protein skimmer and no actual filter cartridge...... Ive never had this problem -- and always used a skimmer and marineland filtration system... The way that the system is designed, i have no way to put the skimmer anywhere else.....

Hi, and welcome to the site!
You could squeeze some filter floss in there...it's just to collect big stuff out of the water. OR You could get an in-tank filter, the new ones are black and could hide behind the rockswork. That way you could run carbon.

Would any of you reccomend a small canister filter to maybe put below the tank in the cabinet?
Just doing some looking, do you think this would work?

not really allowed to post links to competitors on this forum...
I would avoid a canister at all cost.
Blue and white filter media is your absolute cheapest possible solution
You could even add a chemipure elite bag on top of it.
