i have 2 problems!!!!!!!!! i have a 75 gal with ick and high nitrates!!! my nitrates r off the chart!!! my tank breakdown is a 75 with prolly 100 to 125 pounds of lr! 50 pounds of ls and the rest just reg sand! i have a twinspot wrasse, a snowflake eel, a 3 stripe damsel that im ready to feed to my pirahna!!! a sleeper goby and an atlantic blue tang! i have a feeling that my ick was brought upon by my nitrates but im not exactly positive! i recently took out 15 gallons of sw and replaced it with fw r/o to drop my salinity to help with the ick...plz...some advice!!!

Have you recently added any fish , rock , or corals ? I`m guessing you don`t have a quarantine tank . Good time to get one if you don`t . What are your water parameters ? How old is the tank ?

Definitely slow down. Do not take out any more water into you begin posting numbers as to your water parameters. What is your specific gravity/salinity currently at?
Hyposalinity is the best way to get rid of ich but it cannot be done in a tank with live rock and inverts.

i have no inverts! i had some snails but my wrasse ate them and i took all my live rock out! rite now my salinity is currently at .016

Okay, well, if you have neither of those two things, you can slowly bring the specific gravity down to 1.009 over the course of 48 hours. Just as a warning, hyposalinity is only recommended if you have a refractometer because you need to be very accurate with your readings.
While in hyposalinity, you can do larger water changes to help bring down the nitrates, as well. Just make sure the water you are putting back in is EXACTLY 1.009.

ich has a life cycle, the only time you can kill it and break the cycle is by getting rid of it when its in the stage you see, spots on your fish. I'm not sure what ginger does exactly, but i can tell you that it works, and works better then anything else. It has been talked about in great lengths on some of the other forums

I believe that most ich parasites are killed when they are in the free-swimming stage; not in the fish.

You're right...i didn't phrase that properly...thats when a UV will work on them

U.V. will get the free-swimmers if they happen to hit the U.V.intake before they hit a fish. The only sure methods I'm aware of are hyposalinity or copper.

once u get the ick problem under control u need to evaluate the nitrate problem. r u over feeding? r u not doing matinance? is your equiptment bad? i could go on all day but u really need to get it undercontrol. actually now that i think about it. you have no clean up crew so that could be a variable but then again you have 150lbs of lr. i suggest when this is all done with the ick get a hard core clean up crew.
