well to an extent ther dead but i find it very unlikely that ther is nothing on ther that is alive. live rock hase a bunch of different good bacteria but bass rock only hase a few. at least that is what i am garentied from my lfs.
Base rock is that dry stuff sitting in boxes on the floor. If it is in water it is usually live.

hmm. well i always thought it was that pale rock that fish stores cheap in the tank next to the live rock. at least that is how it is at my lfs. they sell it for 2 bucks a pound.

If they're keeping it in the tank next to the live rock they're trying to seed it and doing you a favor. All the LFS's around me keep it in a crate on the floor in some dark corner so people can't see it and buy the live rock instead.

hahaha, thats a neat trick to earn a few extra bucks. my lfs is by far better than any other i have been too. they actualy know how to take care of fish!
