I personally dislike hex tanks in saltwater and believe they do limit you. They are limiting in terms of circulation lower in the tank, and as a result gas exchange. They are extremely limiting in terms of what you can keep, as most fish do not swim vertically. They make reasonable seahorse tanks and reefs with few fish ( a single MH pendant works nicely). But overall I find them very limiting in terms of filtration, circulation and the fish you can keep.

hex IMO are good for seahorses. They don't need high flow. My ponys never cruised around in the 20 high. We put then in a hex tall and they cruise up and down and around all day. Thats the only time i would say go hex in saltwater.
