OK, i was looking at my fish tank when all of a sudden my overflow started acting funny so i looked at it and the u-tube keeps getting a big air bubble in it,.. barely allowing any water to pass through... when i try adjusting the overflow box, the u-tube keeps sucking in to much water to fast??? why is it doing this???? and how can i stop it so it'll start acting normal again???? (when i do my top offs i put the water in my overflow... is this bad to do???)
thanks for your help

1) Check the bottom of the return hose and make sure it's not located anywhere near the intake of your pump.
2) Make sure the u tube is not cracked.
3) Don't top off into the overflow. It causes bubbles. Maybe top off into your sump. :)

what do you mean by...1) Check the bottom of the return hose and make sure it's not located anywhere near the intake of your pump.
??? isnt the return hose connected to a pump...or are we talking about something different???

I think aeval means that make sure that your return pump is not right next to the piping of the overflow that goes into the sump.... it should be on the other side of your sump... and yes I always top off on my return chamber of my sump... as for the flow... you want flow... as long as your sump is not completely full you should be fine... if there is a big bubble like in the top of where the U is... 2 things I can suggest... first... try shaking your U tube a few times.. sometimes that works... if it doens't stick a little airline tubing up there... and suck it out... hope this helps...

Water goes from the U tube, to the sump. The intake is the end of your U tube in your sump. If it is too close to your return pump, the water swirls will pull air and it will bubble up your intake hose to the U Tube in your tank.

I think he meant by checking your return to make sure it's not anywhere close to your intake. How long have you set this up??? I know I had to adjust my overflow box to a certain point to get it corrected. :happyfish

ok i tryed it and i had no luck
u-tube not cracked
end of piping is not near any pump
its just when i start up my over flow the u-tube is sucking in to much water wich is lowering my overflow level so that no more water can be sucked in.. meaning air gets in thier which then causes the over flow to "" over flow "" then my sump gets empty where its suppose to pump up more water and which would cause my main tank to overflow... im not having any luck finding a solution...
when i shake the u-tube to get the big bubble out it does work but it just gets that bubble right back in their.... is thier some way to slow down how much the u-tube is sucking in???

It sounds to me that there is not enough water running through the system.
The only thing I can think of is that it has been working for you in the past but have you been topping off?

yea i top it off everyday since its been up in running... i got it somewhat fixed now... im not having problems with it at this point in time but their is a good size bubble in the
u-tube... im not having any overflowing problems so im not to worried about it for right now

how did you fix it? and is the problem of it overflowing because the U tube stops working??? If this is the case it is because the syphon is broken... I think I may have an idea  that is if it hasn't always been like this... lemme know.

is it the type that it is a u tube and there is a box on each side?
If it is... the problem may be that the box inside the tank is actually high enough that the part of the u tube that is on the inside tank is on the bottom of that box which is restricting full flow of water.
