I have a custom drilled 65 gallon glass tank, it has a black plastic divider however i was putting in some new rock and I slipped and hit the plastic divider and it broke, ive been told several different ways that its only there for hood or glass purposes and some say it adds support i rigged it together for the time being but i need to know if its needed. i just installed a 175 watt halide yesterday and i think it got the plastic hot then it cooled overnight and made it brittle. the light is only 4 inches from it.

Yikes. That's not a good scenario. You may want to go ahead and cut it out, drain the tank some and add a eurobrace across the top... a 1/4" thick by 6" wide piece of glass siliconed in where the brace would be. That would be the absolute best fix you could get. The brace is there for extra support, believe it or not. lol.

I agree it is there for support, I would do like Snake said drain the tank down about a third leave the broken brace try to crazy glue it back together then silicon or crazy glue an acrylic strip across the whole length of the broken brace, you might have to smooth out the joint on the broken brace to seal the acrylic strip good. Good luck - Also sounds like your MH is a bit too close to the top of the tank.
