Help sick hippo tang

I bought three hippo tangs last week.Put them in a 40 gal qt.
All have been doing great ammonia little high.Till tonite change 10 gal of water and ammonia jumped up.2 of them are doing great but on is breathing real heavy color is fading and has no clue what its doing.Anything I can do?Have a strong feeling he'll be dead by morning.

Amonia and nitrite in any levels can be lethal...also, how did you acclimate the fish to the tank? Osmotic or ph shock could be prevelant as well...as can be just a poor health specimen.

Having three hippos in a 40 gallon tank is not a great idea either. How big are the fish? Hippos get pretty big. Do you have other fish as well?

By QT do you mean quarintine tank? They need to be cycled also. Is it an uncycled tank?
