Help, tank starting to turn tan

Have a soon to be reef tank, I hope, that has been cycling now for 4 months and it is starting to turn a tan/light brown color everywhere on the rocks, sand and even the glass...can anyone make suggestions... Thanks

When i started my first tank years ago i had a similar problem with what i think was diatoms and it was because i used tap water to fill my tank. took a little while but my cleaning crew ended up cleaning it up and i also switched to RO/DI water. I'm no expert but that was my experience

its diatoms and its normal on a new tank. it will go away by itself.

I do use an RO but it is not DI, my other tanks are not doing the same but they have been running for years. Hope that I can get this under control soon, I hate seeing it look like this.... but thanks for your input...was thinking along the same lines

It is a diatom outbreak, and it will usually happen on a new tank. I suggest that you use ro/di, ro, or distilled water in your tank, just because the water is good enough for you to drink doesn't mean it is good enough for your fish tank, using tap water can cause a lot of problems.

Cycling for 4 months? Your tank should have finished cycling at least 2 months ago. The diatoms are not a problem, but using RODI will deprive them of silicates and they will disappear faster, and permanently.

Do you have a CUC? How often do you do water changes?

Ok, at the risk of sounding stupid what is CUC...and I do water changes every 2 weeks

AAAH, yes have a clean up crew of about 60 snails, 30 crabs, starfish....

how big is your tank?

sounds like brown algae to me.
You might try some macro algae (in a refugium usually) to consume the nutrients and starve the algae.
Also a lights out and stopping food additions for a few days will kill off the brown stuff.

Nope water isn't brown, but it is on the sand, rocks and glass, think maybe looking some better today...Thanks for all your suggestions.....

Okay sounds like simple diatoms. It's kinda a stage for a new tank...it'll clear up.
