From experience:
If your bulbs are 10 months old, no glass lid, and have that much salt on TOP of your light box, imagine what your bulb looks like?
I had this problem with one of my tanks where frogspawn seemed to be melting, and it turned around after the bulb was cleaned . The light eventually was filtered through a film of salt creep.
Don't give up! these things will make you a smarter, more efficient reefer.
Good luck!
Change out your heater

I just found a bad heater on my tank..
It's set for 82...the tank is at 86 and it's still on!!
Watch your heater like a hawk...Keep the fan on till past 82 and see if the heater kicks on at the right temp..
I just bought a new on today...I've had 4 stick on me already...One was a Pro Heat IC Titanium.
I also bought a Digital Thermometer that has high and low temp alarms..

Keep an eye on it...try leaving it unplugged for a day and watch the temp..
What other pumps/powerheads any other equiptment do you have...
One thing might be running really hot... Try touching all your pumps..

i touched every tank part, nothing is hot. after running the fan for about 10 hours or so i noticed that i evaporate hella more water!! holy cow like 2x more since the fan blows out evaporation..
im also going to buy a new heater, i saw it on at 79 degrees when it was set for 75

Get a fan....a small one and place it where it will circulate the top of the tank/water - but make sure you secure it so it won't fall it! Our tank was close to 90 and our fish store sold us a small fan (radio shack) and told us how to install it and our temp went down within a day!!!!

Oh - you live in west palm beach...we live in palm beach gardens and the store we went to is Crystal Reef Aquariums - it is on Northlake Blvd. on the right side after you cross over Prosperity Farms Road (going east). Go there and get the fan!

How long has the temp been at 90? I dont think that the heat of the water would do that to your coral, what are your tank perimeters?

Maybe they're hidden really well but I dont see any PHs in your tank. What are you using for movement? Besides water quality, good movement is the most important thing if you want a healthy reef.

Over the past year, I've had algae problems with my tank. I have finally gotten it under control and had planned on starting to put corals in. Last week(Thursday night) I bought another 70ish pounds of LR from another hobbyist. He said it had been in a tank so I don't think there should have been much die off. He also gave me a frogspawn and a rock with some mushrooms. By Saturday everything had completely melted away. I had an Urchin that I found dead. I've had a Xenia in my tank for several months now that has not grown at all. I checked my temp and seem to be at a constant 80 degrees. The pH seems to be at 8.0-8.2...I have trouble determining the exact color. The ammonia is at .25ppm. Not zero, but I don't think it's so high to have caused the problem. Any other ideas as to what could be the problem?
The tank is a 75 with 2 150W DE HQI MH's that are about 12" abouve the tank.

I've got two 3 inch fans from Radio Shack that I wired directly to the lighting ballasts of my 65Act Blues. One blows into the light housing, the other sucks the air out. They come on when the lights come one. You may wnat to give that a shot also. Incidently, the 4 inch fans are quieter so I'm going to switch to those soon. Just make sure you get AC fans not DC fans...I'm running about 305Watts into a 50gal bow-front. The lights are about 3 inches above the water. House temp about 78 degrees, water temp from 79 to 81 degrees. Panama City Beach Florida.

you are completely off topic, and especially for an old thread. however some advice is needed still. you have a 75 which is fairly deep, 150's arent really strong enough to get to the bottom of the tank, you need 250's IMO, and your lights are sitting too high off the top. try to bring your lights down to about 4-6 inches see if things improve, if not you will have to upgrade to 250's

I'm not sure why I'm off topic...the problem in the thread is melting corals. And if I'm not mistaken, the thread isn't that old.
As far as the tank being deep, a 75 is the same depth as a 55.
As for the lights, the instructions say that they should be at least a foot above the tank, but I was planning on lowering them anyway and adding fans.
Even with that, would the frogspawn and mushrooms die in just 2 days??

Wocka1, I live in the Tampa Bay area and I don't use a heater in my 90 gallon. The temp never goes above 78, nor does it get below 74. Check the pump in the hang on filter you got there. My wife's 20 gallon FWT climbed and we found that the impeller was bad making the pump motor run hot. But, it never reached 90 degrees.

I had my tank show up at almost 90 one day when my heater went wackers.
I bought a new one and basically turned it off when I could monitor the temp with my digital. I slowly brought the temp back down to 80 in two days. At night I would leave the temp as is with the heater and let it drop again the next day.
The temp was that high for maybe two days before I starting bringing it down, and I didn't lose anything. Things definitely look happier when it came back down, but I don't think you'll see a drastic loss in a short time like that.

Careful with lowering temp to fast in your tank, it will shock your fish, do it slowly over afew days.
