HELP!! TOOTH CORAL PROBLEMS...

Guys,
I don't know if this is normal or not. What do you think?
For the past few months, I've watched the very first coral I purchased start going through some pretty amazing changes. It started to develope spikes on one side of his skeleton and his "body" retracted from there allowing it to grow. Slowly he has started to grow on all sides and he's very careful to not have his body inflate during this sensitive period...(I think probably to prevent the spikes from jabbing him). In the past couple of days, he has actually shifted right out of the skeleton and is hanging on to one side.....literally by a thread!!
So, I removed him from between the rocks where he was and placed him facing straight up, in hopes that he settles back in.
Have you guys even seen or heard of this?? Everything else is doing fine. Water quality is excellent. Is this normal? … or is he finished??
Any tips would be appreciated!
Thanks guys!

I have heard of them receeding, and withering away to nothing, but nothing like you are experiencing. I wish I could help, but this is a new one to me. Keep us informed.
