Side note... neither of my heaters will fit in the sump... oh well.

Heaters in sumps can be tricky. Some might opt to try and find two smaller heaters that would fit. People like this because of the added redundancy of having a second heater as a back up in case one fails which is not uncommon. One is better than none in some cases. Thought it's not something I'd necessarily rush for when you already have one you can use for the time being.

Well, I think I went too far with the heater I bought. It's a 250 watt and that may be too much for 55G. So I may go exchange it for the 150 or 200.
Also, would heaters in a 10G sump work efficiently? Seems like your asking a lot of any heater in a 10G sump. Does the heater have time to heat the water efficiently when you consider how fast it's moving through there?

I believe its recommended to place heaters in areas that get good circulation. So sumps work good for that. Pluss its less chance for a fish or something to get injured if they happen to brush up agains a heater when its turned on.
