Help w/ protien skimmer

I hope someone can please help me with this. New tank, set up by store, they didn't leave the directions...so here we go!!! I have a new problem with my protien skimmer this morning...it is filling with water and pouring all these bubbles back into the filter resevoir. It used to just fill with bubbles and collect the protien. Does anyone here know how to adjust it without me flooding my house. As youy can tell, I am very new to this. I called the store and they told me to just shut off the skimmer until I cycle and get fish.. THEY are the ones who turned it on. I have about 2 weeks left in my cycle. I appreciate any help on this!!!

Go back to the store and demand a manual for everything you paid for.
What brand of a skimmer is it? Someone here probably has one and can tell you more about it.

The protein skimmer is probably turned up to high... what I mean by this is there is to much air being mixed in with the water. If you happen to know which type of skimmer it is, I could tell you how to adjust this.
If you don't know... look for some type of air-tubing coming from the pump that is attached to the protein skill...
Also as an FYI... there is no set time for a cycle. The tank has cycled once all of your water parameters have reached exceptable levels. These levels will depend on what type of tank you are setting up. Don't turn the protein skimmer off during the cycle period either.
If you need any additional help... don't be afraid to ask...

Thanks everyone.... The store has really let me down after they sold me the tank. I did pay for monthly service from them also. Anyway, I dont know the make but I can describe it. It sits in the middle of my filtration system and has a large tube going into the bottom. On the top connected by a red connector is the cup that collects the protien. You twist off the red connector and remove the top to clean it. There is another small tube that has a small air hole that lets in the air for the skimmer. If I cover it with my finger, it stops the flow of air. There is also a red knob that when turned, increases the flow on the skimmer. It seams to be at the lowest setting since if I turn it the other way, it flows out of the top of the skimmer faster. It's a 74 bowfront with all the trimmings.

Welcome the the world of salt water aquariums!
Local fish stores often let us down, lol. This board is often a support group for the disenchanted.
I would seriously demand all of your manuals and proper service. Otherwise I would give them their tank back! The only benefit of buying a complete system from a store is the support. If they aren't giving you that then I'd walk away from the deal.

You said it used to just collect the skimate. Does this mean that you had this skimmer on a different tank? If so then what is different from when it was set up befor. Did the LFS put a new pump on it or something? all skimmers have to have water pumped into them and must have a place where the water comes back out. Is the water on yours comeing out of the collection cup or out of a place where it should.

If the skimmer is sitting in the water, try raising it up a bit.

Also do not putin if I did not see if someone told you is water additive like strees coat it is slime aloe in it it will make the skimmer go wild I know the company the the skimmer said it will do that do not not use that.

Your going to have to decrease the amount of air that is being mixed with the water or lower the water level in the skimmer. Since raising the skimmer is usual more difficult, I would decrease the amount of air being mixed with the water. With this approach, you are going to have to adjust the air intake once in awhile.
Since you have found the air line... this shouldn't be to difficult to fix.
They sell an air tube regulator... usually a small black device that looks just like a manual water shutoff value. They are very inexpensive.... Purchase one and stick it on the end of the air tube. Then manually adjust the air intake so you are not overskimming.
You don't want to over-skim... all you are going to do is remove wanted elements from the water.
If you need any additional help... don't be afraid to ask.

How long has it that you had the tank setup?
Should not use a skimmer till cycled of six weeks or more so the good bacteria can grow in the water, rock and sand.
Is there a flow setter on pump for water or air of skimmer? Is there a name on the Skimmer so we get a pic of what it is?
Also like they help me when I started buy books of want you want your tank to be and read and read it will help a lot too many things in the hobby of saltwater between fish of what do to do and not to do to remember so you have the books also you can go back and look up again plus look here also for help.

From your description it sounds a lot like you have a Coralife SUper Skimmer........A manual for it can be downloaded from the internet, but I would demand a manual and all the paper work that came with everything that you purchased. Seems they do not want you to be tank savy and learn anything so they can get the money to do service and maintenance .
That said, to reduce bubbles you need to make sure the outflow tube (tube that water going back intot he tank flows from is not below the surface of the tanks water level. The pump should be raised as high as possible in the water, for best results..........DO NOT alter the air intake tube or put a valve on it thinking you can control it..........and also do not alter the little bleed vent on the top of the outflow tube.........Depending on setup height of pump on skimmer etc if the water level in your tank needs topping off that can make micro bubbles as well..........turn the red knob on the adjuster fully clockwise. This should stop all outflow of water......then slowly open the red knob turning CCW while looking at the reaction chamber of the skimmer (long clear tube under collection cup) until you adjust the tops of the bubbly water so its about 1/2 to 3/4" below the funnel portion of the collection cup. In that position your knobs little red pointer (have to look close to see it but its there) its probbaly going to be at or around the 5 to 7 oclock position. This will give you a drier skim, and the cup wil not fill as fast with wet skim...........If your outflow tube is not in contact with the water, and your bubble column is set as described above, just close off red knob a touch more........If you look at the bottom of the reaction chamber where the air infuser is discharging all the bubbles into the reaction chamber, you should see 99.9% of the infused bubbles rising upwards into the collection cup area............if you notice a great deal of bubbles flowoing down under the infuser and towards the outflow port at the bottom, clos eoff red knob slightly. Some coralife skimmers also come with a valve to restrict water flow.....usually not needed. You can also slide the skimmer up a bit higher in its bracket, as its possible it slid down which makes it lower in the water of the tank and will also cause you the bubble and cup filling problems.......Best results is outflow tube barely touching or not touching the water level in the tank, and the pump within 2 inches or so below water level of tank.
Just to clarify the settings on the skimmer, the original setup instructions for the most part are WRONG. Coralife will tell you that as well as they screwed up with the dimensions and setup proceedures. They have not placed the new setup instructions in the newly packaged skimmers yet, and the setting of outflow and pump heights is what has been changed.........They expect to have a downloaded version of the new instructions on their website shortly, but the original and handy to have instructions are available from a few websites, which I would get as they are good to have for basic info on the skimmer and what causes such and such to happen........Like I said its only their setup dimensions that are off, so the basic instuctions still have value.

CHIPMAKER,
You are the best!!! You were right on about the outflow and the water level in the tank. It is back to working fine now. I can't thank you enough and thanks to everyone else for all the info and ideas. This site is invaluable to us beginners.
I am truly relieved!!!

IMO-Turn the skimmer OFF during the cycle. You don't want to take anything out of the tank. Let nature take its course and then turn on the skimmer.
