i really hope 6" wide is just a typo.
Anyways, you can find out anything you want by doing searches or posting threads concerning a certain topic.
You definatley need a protein skimmer and some good quality lights( but research what you want to keep before you buy lights cause different thing require different light amounts)

You may want to do some serious research....web...books...whatever you can get your hands on before diving in. Take a walk around your local lfs to see what is involved. I read lots and lots before I even put water in my tank and I am so glad I did! Also, this website has alot of areas on the message board Everyday I find something else out that I didn't know. You will do just fine once you feel comfortable. Good luck and welcome to the saltwater universe :) I got the test kit that does all the water parameters at once, make life much easier having it all in one place. I probably wouldn't do the dock thing to get your rock since the water is most likely polluted with all kinds of bad things. It's amazing what you will learn....

This is what I did when I first got started about three months ago, with no earthly idea about how to start a saltwater tank.
On this site all your questions on how to get started are already answered, if you will do a search down at the bottom, members post pics on everything from building stands, making their own filtration system and how they work, lighting, what to add first, cycling your tank, ex......... Take your time, gather as much information as you can, save money, it cost a pretty penny
I have a 55 gallon reef tank that is awsome to me, thanks to all the helpful members here. Good luck..

one of these days I'm going to make a website on all things needed and FAQ on starting an aquarium. well...some day. there's so much to learn and to buy! definitely start with some books.
I have the Conscienscious Marine Aquariast and the New Marine Aquarium. The 2nd one is shorter and a good base...the 1st is more detail. Those books coupled with this message board should provide a ton of info. Don't be afraid to ask questions here...although I would search a topic before asking the same question that a bunch of users have already answered.
Seriously, you could spend 2-3 hours a night reading posts and gather a great deal of info. Hey, I did it.
Once you start reading the posts you'll be able to get more detailed questions. Also, look at other users equipment - often shown in the signature below...
one thing I would go with is Live Rock from Florida. so great, and so much life on it. From the beginning I thought that I'd go with Fiji rock, but not when I saw the pix of the Florida aquacultured. so cool!!!!!
