my yellow tang has been acting a little stressed the past couple days, hiding most of the day. well i just got home from work and i noticed he is pale in color and has red streaks in his fins. what is this?? i got a pic, it's not great though.

do you fed the tang a diet high in algae and vitamin C? My yellow looked pale when i first got him, I fed him several different types of good greens and he started getting color back.

has the fish been eating, does it rub up against the sand? It could be a bacterial infection from the stress, what are the tank parameters?

yeah he comes out of hiding to eat. yeah i noticed about a week ago that he would turn on to his side and rub on the sand every once and a while. ammonia spiked acouple days ago from a dead hermit but is back to 0 now nitrite <0.3 ph8.0 sg 1.023 temp 80. how would you treat a bacteral infection?

I would put him in a QT tank if you got one and try feeding food soaked in garlic extract. If the infection worsens then you will need antibiotics Maracyn2 for salt water fish works good. If you don`t have a QT try doing a large water change and check the ph levels, these types of infections are fairly common in tanks with low ph.

o.k...unfortunatly i don't have a qt tank, but i'll try the garlic. if i end up needing to do the antibiotics can it be done in the main tank or will i have to qt?

you would need a qt for the antibiotics, do the large water change it just might make the difference. Also do a search for red streaks on here you will find many topics with yellow tangs and red streak bacterial infection.

Our yellow Tang got red streaks in its fins while IN the QT tank....it seemed stressed. As soon as it was returned to the big tank...the streaks and all red coloration went away. He had some red that looked "inside" him,,under his "skin"...it all went away when he had room to Zoooom. :D
Oh,,and ours always turned pale when lights out..then full color again. Our Scopus Tang does the same thing. "Mood fish".

I put in a killer counch in my tank that stresses my tang. He got red streaks on him as well.
I did a big water change, removed what was stressing him, and he was fine.
In your case, it sounds like the spike was the stress. Make sure you got the spike culprit.
