I have seriously wondered if 400 would be too much. Maybe I just haven't caught the SPS bug, but I think sofies are more beautiful, and so I THINK I'll be sticking with mostly softies, clams and a few SPS. I guess I think that there is as much color to be found in softies and LPS, and they flow with the current, which is something SPS obviously don't do.
Would 2 250w MH, 12" off the surface be enough light for what I want them to do? And no overheating?
Broomer, how is your lid hinged? What sort of device are you using to hold the lip open? I was looking at friction hinges (stay open unless you push them closed) but I don't know how well they would work after a while since they are made of metal. Any chance you have or can take a picture of your solution to the problem?
