A 10 gallon is fine to use a quarantine tank. You need a filter, heater, and some cheap decorations and/or pvc pipe. You do not want any live rock or substrate in the tank.

i actually saw that..and petsmart has the same thing, for the same price. the one i'm talking about is the kit, they sell it for 49.99:
10g tank, w/hood and light
thermometer
heater
filter
and some extra stuffs..
i kinda figured it's cheap for it's price. but if a filter and a powerhead is all i need, then i would go for what you said....

You could use an aquarium light, but then again, you can also go to Home Depot and spend a lot less on the same light. It is your call there. All you need is something that will give the fish some light and allow you to see the fish.
The things I mentioned, plus something to light the tank up, is all you need.
Here should be the cost:
tank - $9
filter - $15
heater - $10
cheap decorations/PVC - $5
light - $5-$10
Total - $40-$45

I would recommend going to your LFS and picking up a sponge that you would use in your filter. Put that in your display and leave it there for a week or so. Then, move that to your quarantine tank. This will prevent a cycle since you will be transferring your biological bacteria in your display to your quarantine tank.

Yes u will need a heater...IF your tank is prone to drop in temp. My tank generally stays around 80 so I don't need a heater. Get a thermometer and the sponge. Usually those filters will come with some sort of bio filter sponge...mine did anyway. Then u just stick that in your mt to get some of the bacteria on it. As for decorations, all I have is a piece of PVC that the fish can get in to hide if it wants to...although it doesn't. I only paid like $3 for a 4" piece. You don't NEED a light either, but they are useful to help keep an eye on your fish. Although u could easily use a shop light so think cheap but think care as well. Just make sure you check your water parameters often. Things can get out of wack pretty quickly in these small tanks. I know as I just battled that problem myself. I have a fish in my 10 gall QT now.
