Basically You could go with a (hang on back) Aqua C Remora Skimmer, so ive herd nothing beats it. With a decient amount of LR you wont even need a filter anymore if u use that skimmer.

You can look at my profile. I have a 55g with a 29g sump. I use an overflow, with a rio 17-20hf return pump, titanium heater with a seperate thermostat, Excaliber skimmer, three maxijet 1200 ph's, 2-175w hamilton pendants with 10k bulbs, four 4" 12v fans on a timer keeping the canopy cool, misc. timers, surge protectors, ground faults, pumps for mixing sw, pumps for adding freshwater, filter pads, omg it just keeps going. I have about 60lbs of sand, and about 100lbs of live rock.

If you have a good canister filter, would that serve as a skimmer? what's the difference, I was told by a friend that I don't really need a skimmer, atleast not yet, and now I'm reading that one may not need a filter if you have a skimmer.
Threed240, I also have a 55g and I don't have half the equipment. Are you going to upgrade to a larger tank and can all of that stuff still be used? Of course I only have fish and LR, but it seems like I'm missing something compared to all your stuff.
Sorry for stealing your thread. I would recommend reading some past threads, there is a lot of stuff on here for our size tank. 55.

Im not planning to upgrade yet. However I do believe in overkilling sometimes, especially in skimming the water. I plan to change my skimmer, since I don't think its doing its job as well as it should. Some of the ph's were just givin to me from family who didn't use them. If you plan on going for a reef aquarium, then you need alot of light and flow. I bought some equipment used, like my lights. They were purchased from a Doctor who was selling all his saltwater setups. Ask around, and you may run across a deal you cant walk away from. I paid $200 for my lights, and they were brand new in the box with bulbs. Ask your LFS for people who are selling out, or check the classifieds here on SWF.
