Help with unknown algae

I have a small piece of rock near the top of my aquarium that has several patches of algae (i'm assuming) that looks like green grass. All of the algae in my tank is red/brown. Nothing in my tank will eat the green stuff. It's only about 1/4 inch long and it's been around for six monts or so. I pulled the rock out to remove it but I couldn't pull it off. I actually broke a piece of the rock off trying to pull it off. Does anyone know what it might be so that I can do more research on getting rid of it? Thanks
