Help with Water Temp

Dp you have any PH in your tank, can you shut your Mag pump off for the night just to see if it is the source of heat, only do this if you have PH in the tank.

He meant PH (Powerhead) to keep the water circulated.
About how long ago did you remove the heater?
Do have maybe a few spare water bottles around?
You can freeze the water inside (be sure to leave the lids sealed) and place the bottles in your fuge to cool the temp of the tank. Sandwich bags or ziplock bags filled with ice cubes will also help lower the temps.
If you go this route I would be sure to double bag to be sure that no water from the melting cubes can mix with your display water. The water bottle technique is really handy in the summer for a small tank if you don't have a chiller and or good AC. I had to use it when in college. Always kept a few water bottles around half full in the freezer.
If your tank is above 30 gallons then it will probably require a few bottles or bags to lower the temp at all. If there is livestock in the tank then its a priority to get the temp down ASAP. 89 is 10 degrees above ideal temp.

Yes; powerheads in the main display will help in multiple aspects. They provide flow to simulate ocean currents, help keep detritus from building up in your rock, help distribute proper flow to prevent stagnant areas, help distribute water helping to maintain pH, are essential for most coral; however in a FO or FOWLR tank you might get away with not as much flow you will still need powerheads, etc etc the list goes on. Koralias and Maxi jets are two good brands to look into. The are relatively inexpensive and do the job just fine. Depending what size tank you have will depend what specific flow rating powerheads you will need.
The vortech MP powerheads would be your top of the line brand. They have multiple settings and are basically miniature wave makers in themselves; however at around $450 each the price tag usually turns most people away.

The only reason I was asking if you had PH power heads so that you could try to shut your pump off for the night to see if that was the souce of your temp problem.

I would lower the temp of the apartment to about 68-72 degrees. This is what I do in my apartment.

Glass top will trap heat, leave it off, any rise in temp you had after taking the top off is a coincidence.
What kind of tank is this, how big etc. 6 T5 bulbs is a lot and will generate some heat.
Do you have any surface agitation? Is the top of the water rippling a lot? This will help to dissipate heat but will also cause some evaporation so you need to be topping off with RODI or distilled water.
Your skimmer has a pump that is inside of the water. Are there any other pumps inside the water like that?
Is your tank located in front of a window where the sunlight hits it?

your mag 9 may be faulty and causing heat. Get a couple of powerheads for your tank, get a couple of clip on fans, (walmart carries them) -until you can check out your main pump and get the rest, use the frozen bottles to get that temp down. Get another thermomater and make sure the one you have is correct.
