I have been battling a break out of red/burgandy colored algae. I can't seem to get rid of it. I do a water change and scrape the sides of the tank and clean the large rocks in the tank. but it always comes back in full bloom worse than it was before i cleaned. any suggestions? (has been going on now for almost 2 months). thanks for any input you have.

You're probably battling a cyanobacteria. It's not a "bad" thing, but obviously you don't like it. So, to get rid of it I suggest this. Shut off your protein skimmer and take out any carbon in your tank and phosphate sponge. Add 2 tablets of FRESHWATER marcyn where the stuff is growing. It'll disappear and if you need to repeat wait a day or so and add another 2 tablets to a different spot where the stuff is growing. TJ

Red legged hermit crabs are rumored to eat cyanobacter. If you want to try an alternative to chemical warfare.
