Some snails will die when they are on their backs. When I walk by my tank I always look inside to see if any fell off the glass etc. I had 1 this morning that i did not notice (on his side) the hermits were taking care of him.

The snails just stop moving and I pick them up to see if they smell rotten and they do.

But I ave heard this test kit, (use it myself) gives an inaccurate reading, but do the water change just in case. And use RO water for the water change to keep algae down.

It's possible the .25 ammonia reading is from the snails dieing and not the original killer in your tank.
Find all the dead animals and remove them, then do a large water change, I'd say 40-50% stretched over 3 days. Then retest your water parameters, and if you still have ammonia at that point make a check list.
1)any new Live rock? (might have decaying items)
2)have you ever added any chemicals? (ICH meds, ect.)
3)stray voltage? (bad heater)
4)take water to your LFS for testing
5)do any of your tank levels fluctuate? (temp, PH, ect.)

I may be wrong but I had 4 snails 2 died I could tell they weren't doing well not sticking to the glass etc.. now this was a 2-3 mo old tank IMO they were starving I feed a forth of a seaweed sheet per week now & the other 2 snails seem to be doing fine. (they find & eat the seaweed like there's no tomorrow) I again could be wrong but if the levels were high wouldn't more snails have died??? Good luck. OH AND EMERALDS need algae too and a new tank wouldn't have the build up yet. I spot feed the emerald too.
