A recent move forced me to break down my 29 gallon tank. I figured this would be a good opportunity to add an additional 1.5" to my sand bed and quarantine my fish. The problem is I now have what seems to be a calcium or mineral buildup on the glass of my tank. It's a white color and makes the glass look like it has been etched. I've almost 100% positive this is a result of adding to much buffer while trying to raise my PH. Here are the steps I took in setting my tank up again:
Day1 - Running power filter and 2 300gph PH's
*I reserved about 20 gallons of the tanks original water and added 9 gallons of new SW.
*Add additional sand
*Moved the tank added water quantities noted above back in the tank.
* Stirred the sand bed to prevent nutrient build up in the middle of the sand bed.
Day 2 - Running power filter and 2 300gph PH's
*Did 60% water change
*Change filter cartridge
Day 3 - Running power filter and 2 300gph PH's
*Began testing water. Of Course everything was perfect except my pH. Ammonia 0, Nitrites 0, Nitrates 0, pH 7.8
*Added a dose of buffer
Day 4 - Running power filter and 2 300gph PH's
*Test water. Ammonia 0, Nitrites 0, Nitrates 0, pH 8.0
*Added a dose of buffer
Day 5 - Running power filter and 2 300gph PH's
*Test water. Ammonia 0, Nitrites 0, Nitrates 0, pH 8.0 :notsure:
*Added a dose of buffer
*Added live rock back to tank.
Day 6 Morning - Running power filter and 2 300gph PH's
*Test water. Ammonia 0, Nitrites 0, Nitrates 0, pH 8.0
*Added a dose of buffer
*Removed the power filter and added my HOB Protein skimmer.
*Added Clownfish, blue damsel, peppermint shrimp, 6 snails
*Noticed some small areas where the mineral build up was beginning to show. I was able to scrape most off but a little remained.
Day 6 Evening - Running protein skimmer and 2 300gph PH's
*Test water. Ammonia 0, Nitrites 0, Nitrates 0, pH 8.0
*The build up on the glass seems to have increased since this morning. It seems to attached it self to areas of the glass that where not cleaned well after stirring the sand.
Today Day 7 - I plan to take a water sample to my LFS to test, but I wanted some input from SWF.com members. How can I get my pH up with out adding more buffer? Is there a way to remove this build up on my tank? Should I remove the fish back to the QT until I get this under control? Both fish and all inverts seem very happy.
