Are Airstones/wands Bad For A Saltwater Tank? How To Add More O2 Saturation? Can You Have To Much Water Movement?

IMO, airstones don't do anything to add O2 even in freshwater. They may disturb the surface a little and that helps, but the bubbles don't add O2. Again, IMO; I think they're useless in SW. They create salt spray and just look artificial. But if you like the look, they won't hurt much either. I would imagine they will clog very quickly in SW as well.

I use airstones in my tank in spring and summer....I don't like the look, but my power goes out constantly so I have battery backed air pumps on all my tanks. Power goes out and the battery kicks in automatically, and then recharges when the power comes back on. Alot cheaper then a generator. Once fall comes around I take them out.

You need a new Power Company.

I actually like the look of the bubbles, but in a SW tank it is not worth it. The salt spray I had was crazy and makes quit a mess. Just point a power head at the surface of the water works great for gas exchange, for me anyway. As I always say just my opinion.

Saltwater is very dense. The bubbles go straight to the top to make a spray mess. They do not distribute oxygen at all. They can cause pop eye if a marine fish swims through the bubbles and they break on the surface of their eye (happens more than you would think). Power heads actually push the water. If you have surface aggitation then the oxygen is being distributed throughout the tank with a power head.

they arent the best thing in sw tanks for reasons stated above like salt creep and spray if the bubbles are to small they can lodge in the gills and cause irratation in the fish.
you can have to much flow but if the water is staying in the tank and the fish arent having to constantly swim to stay in place your all right. you really want to look at atleast 10x the tank turnover rate higher when your dealing with corals. and to add more o2 to the tank add a powerhead at the surface that is breaking the surface but not cause a air effect in the water just enough to cause turbulance with the top layer of water.

Forgot to mention the gill issue. That is another reason not to use an air stone. What kind of filter do you have? If it is a canister then you have to have at least one power head break the surface. If you are using an HOB then position your power heads around the rock.

There is a lot of mis-information, both in FW & SW, as to where O2 comes from. As stated on this thread, it comes from the exchange of gases at the water surface, period. (with some exception that someone will mention.) This is why surface area is almost as important as tank volume when it comes to "how many fish can I get". If fish can go a couple of days in a shipping bag; they can go quite a while with no help in a power outage. (even though the bag has pure O2). I think the biggest problem with a power outage is the loss of flow to the bio-filter bacteria (and subsequent bacteria die-off); but I could be missing something.

When the power goes out; I assume you, and the rest of the town, rush over to check on the "Bubble-Boy".

You know what the funny thing is...there is a neighbor right across the street from me whose power never goes out when mine and most others on my street do, because they are on a different grid (or transformer or something like that...any electric people feel free to jump on that)....Guess which house the Bubble Boy lives in....

My favorite episode involved "shrinkage". We're going to the pool in an hour too!
