Here goes my first 14 Biocube...........

Well, I pondered and pondered about this for a while but I needed somthing to "do away" with that empty corner of the living room, so I bought a 14 gallon Biocube.
I got it all together last night with (new) sand and a few rocks from my established 30 gallon tank. Tonight I put in a few more rocks to make it look like it actually had some sort of soul to it to keep my spirits up.

So far I have about 20 pounds of live rock, about 10 pounds of live sand, 4 crabs and two snails, and one small mushroom that was on one of the rocks from the other tank.......thats it so far.
Plans for this tank will be softies only. I would really like some cool shrooms, ricordia, zoos, possibly a colt coral, a really cool anemone for a future clown to live in and some sort of clam, but my mind is subject to change without notice at any given second.

Ok, pics of tonight. I know for sure I am going to re-arrange the scaping, but for now this will have to do.
Whats your opinion of the rock assymbly? I was looking for the "cave" thing, but I really think this one is a little large and takes up alot of space.

Hey guys thanks! I can't wait till it's filled with coral either. I just put in a Pulsing Xenia last night and is doing very well.
The rock I used was from my 30 gallon tank I have had going for a little over a year. I thought I'd benefit from this and not have to wait on a cycle.
Seems to make sense. The tank is doing great so far!

Ok, day three. Hope these turn out good. I had to downsize them to upload here onto SWF.
I think I will put in my first Ricordia tomorrow. We will see if I have the time.

Kokamo - I see that you are starting a 14 G nano!! and you have an established 30G tank..
not sure if you seen my posts as i'm trying to start out in SW and ppl say that a 14G tank is easy to do but some ppl say go with a 30 G tank.. As maint will be easier for me for a bigger tank.. As you have both up and running what do you think would make my life easier (as say if i go away on a trip for a week or i i'm not home for a couple of days)

Well, there are some pros and cons about having either tanks. In my opinion, I think a 30G would be better for having more water volume, but then you have more water evaporation. Then you have the 14G which has very little water evap but less water volume.
A 30G can easily have a sump and that givez you an option of having either a top off valve or some sort of drip mechanisim to keep the salitity stable while you are out of town. You could still do this with a nano, but the chances of you having a nano means you either don't have the $$$$ to get a bigger one or you have limited amounts of space......either or IMO.
To awnser your queston directly, a bigger tank would be better, but I would highly advise a sump/refuge to go along with it.
When I started, I setup a 10 gallon with nothing but a hang on filter and biowheel combo. That did me good for about 3 months then I upgraded to my 30. Since the upgrade, I added the sump, UV sterilzer, metal haylide lights, an Emperor hang on filter and a bunch of coral. :joy: Since the one year mark of my 30G I am amazed how easy it is to maintain.

Well, everything is going super good. The green stuff is finally starting to not be such a problem like it was in the beginning. I finally got the rockwork the way I like it and then started to add a few things. I got a big ole Colt coral, just to make it look like it's got somthing in the tank, and a few shrooms. Can someone ID them for me?
Take a look at the first few pix of the Zenia, now look at them!! Just a few weeks! I can't belive how fast this stuff grows!
I also got a Purple Lobster in there and he is doing supurb. He eats a whole bunch!

Hey thanks, yes, stock everything. Havent touched anything. The only thing I have done is pull the stock filter and use a peice of media filter that goes in the sump of my 30 gallon. Clear as day.

I have just started my 14 Gallon Biocube too, and I can foresee having to shell out $9 for replacement carbon filters is going to suck. May I ask what you used for filter replacement?

hey um which biocube is that? i know it's the 14 but can you give me the link? also, did you just use everything that comes with the system or did you customize it

Hey Husk, I just used a piece of filter media from the sump off my 30 gallon tank. I cut it to fit on top of the overflow....where all of the bio balls are. I took out the original filter and just used the filter media only. It works great and the water is clear as day.

This is an Oceanic Biocube 14 gallon model.....he latest one. With a quick search, I found this one.........
