Just wanted to share where I am at so far. Getting excited my live rock goes in today. I will update when that happens.... The power heads push the sand around hopefully the live rock will stop that. Nothing too exciting..

Looks good so far...can't wait to see what the aquascape will be like! How much LR are you getting today?
P.S. I see that you already got the sand in there...remember to try to set your rock directly on the tank's bottom so that later on your fish/sand sifting inverts won't be able to topple it off the sand and cause the rock to crash against your glass. It looks like a shallow sandbed so far so hopefully you can clear out some of the sand without much trouble to place the rock.

Cool nice tip I would have just placed the LR on the sand. It should be easy enough to clear out the sand to put the LR directly on the tank floor. I am getting 52lbs of LR today and the tank is a 47 gal. I was told to do a shallow sandbed to prevent stuff from getting trapped in there causing my nitrates to spike.
Thanks

I've never heard of using that shallow of a sand bed before. I keep my tank bare bottom. This makes it very easy to siphon the uneaten food from the bottom of my tank. As a result I don't have to keep a cleanup crew. Cleanup crews dispose of a lot of uneaten protein in the tank, but they also create additional bioload. There are more reasons, but they are irrelevant to this discussion. If the method of disposing of uneaten food you will use is a cleanup crew then I would recommend a deeper sand bed. It's all personal preference, but if you plan on keeping certain fish (most wrasse, jawfish, some gobies, etc) then you would need a deeper sand bed than you have now. I'm not sure of the depth, as I obviously avoid these fish. But if I remember right, most wrasse like a 2" deep sand bed. Not flaming you, just pointing out something I thought you might prefer to know before you add your live rock. Tank looks great so far!

Well there is 30 lbs in there right now. If I were to add more would that be a huge mess or would I have to drain out the water in there now. Ill measure the depth. If I move the sand from where the LR is going to go it will disperse more..

i use a 1" sand bed, because i like the looks of sand, as opposed to bare bottom.
i don't need a cleanup crew either.
wrasse like a dsb? why? my wrasse don't go near the sand. what wrasse make their homes in the sand?
btw- i'd steer clear of those cheap battery powered thermometers. i've had many that were innacurate.

Thanks for the plug, I am going to do a fish/reef not sure how crazy I will get with the reef But I am sure to have some in there So as time goes on Im still very early in this. So on the extent of the reef Im going to start small and go from there.
