i've read some threads about some fish being killed by getting sucked into the power head.
when i kept african cichlids they mated adn had a bunch of little frye swimming around. unfortunately she mad her nest near my filter intake. i was concerned that they would be sucked in so here's what i did.
i went out and bought a sponge for a small filter and put the sponge on the intake. didn't lose any fish and also it became another part of the filter.

make fish food out of me if this was already posted.

How ironic these posts are just this morning I noticed a decrease in flow on my newly installed powerhead. So i start fiddling with and in there is my damsel. I'll have to try that is there other ways?

you could put a filter media bag on it but the sponge doesn't restrict the water flow as much.
