Hermit crabs from the beach?

Is there anything wrong with taking some hermits from the beach. Also i come across mole crabs/ sand fleas very often can these be successfully put in a home aquarium?

I do believe that you can not legally take any thing from this nations beaches. I know people take sand rocks Etc. but they can get into a bit of trouble doing that. With that said, I think the hermits found around Georgia would die as the water tempeture for our reef tanks would remain too high (76-82). What is needed are items from TROPICAL areas. Places where the water tempetures remain high.

I have a friend who collects hermits from the beach every year for her tank she also has a few fish that she has caught and put in there so yeah it can be done i know that my family has carried home lots of hermits and sand dollars from beaches in florida but ive never put them into my tank.

I have put snails and crabs from the beach in my tank and they have lived but most of the crabs we have here in ga get real big and later can cause problems, but the little black snails that we see eveywhere I keep in my sump they are good at eating alge.I have checked on the laws in collecting crabs and snail here in GA with the DNR and they told me they do not know of any unless you are planing to sell them. where are you from sound like you live around savannah

There are many things wrong with this.

It may be illegal (those few crabs could cost you hundreds... If you know what I'm saying

The crabs may have foreign parasites not common to your reef
The water temperature would be to cool
Sand crabs/fleas would eventually die due to not enough micro fauna in your sand, they would decimate it in no time.
Just a few things to think about...

Like anything else in this hobby, you must do your research... Here in Florida you can collect 20 per day if you have a SW fishing license....I have and do collect them for my tanks...I put the kids to work collecting them for me..
( of course Im probably breaking some sort of child labor law
) I only collect the blue legged ones...even the kids know that...And to all of you that question if it is safe to put these collected critters in your tank...where do you think they come from when you buy them??? There is not some massive hermit crab nursery going on someplace...they are collected ( just like I do) and sold to people like you and me. The blue legged ones are most popular for reef tanks...I believe they average .79 cents per crab. The red legged get HUGE so we don't keep those...and the brown/white legged ones are agressive so we don't like those. Like I said..do some research...its fun and you might just learn something.

I forgot to tell you if you look around docks or the pier at the water line you can find limpets, they are a little hard to get off. just use a knife to pry them off ,I got 4 or 5 about a year ago and now I got them everywhere.
