hermits that kill Astrea snails for their shell.

I watched a blue leg hermit kill an Astrea snail last night for it's shell (for an upgrade). Mind you he was already wearing one to begin with. Is this their prefered shell??? I had many upgrade shells available, but they don't use them. I was wondering why my Astreas were getting kocked off. I guess now I know.

I have only seen one hermit crab eating a snail that had fallen on its back. And yes it was a blue legged hermit crab. I pulled the snail out and I haven't seen any more aggressive activity but those snails are careful about not falling on their backs I can assure you.

Personally I have never had any probs with my blue legs. They only eat what is dying or dead IME, but I also don't think you should have a million of them either. I have 20 in my 90g.

Hmmmmmmm....I've had blue legs and scarlets in my reef for nearly a year now.....they number about 15 each and are combined with 20 or so turbo snails and approximately 10 assorted other snails........never have the hermits been murders................not to my knowledge anyway....go figure
