Hey Airforce2...you out there?

Just wondered how it's going with you. How's the tank doing? Mine's progressing, slow but sure. It seems that I'm still going through all that "new tank" stuff, little by little and 6 months old already. I do have corals (as you know), but I've put a hold on adding any because I have this green stuff growing on my glass since I put my new lights in. I've scraped that stuff the last few weeks during water change, but boy is it ever tough stuff. I just don't get it, my phosphate test shows 0.
Maybe it's my light schedule...here's what I'm doing actinics come on at 9:00 a.m, daylights on at 11:00 a.m., moonlights always, daylights go off at 7:00 p.m., actinics off at 9:00 p.m. Too much?
Any help appreciated.

I just started my first tank yesterday, so I have no idea what I'm talking about but they told me today to keep my lights on to a maximum of about 8 hours. Any more than that and you start getting lots of greens.

Just noticed your post and that green stuff sounds very familiar. I have something like that in my tank, mostly just on the lower part of my back class and it is tougher then coraline for me to remove. It doesn't seem to spread very much and hasn't given me a problem so I haven't worried about it. The stuff I have is a darkish lime green and is very smooth and clings to the glass very tightly. Still not sure what it is...

Yup, that's what I've got. I've been trying to scrape it off with water changes...but only little by little as me and my fishies can take it. Gotta get rid of it...

Holy Smokes!! I'm just about 30 miles north of Mad Town in Beaver Dam...know where that is?

Your lights seem about right to me, 8hrs of daylight, actinics are not going to make a difference on algae growth (other than coralline).
That hard green stuff grows in most tanks regardless of very low phosphate and nitrate levels.
best way to keep it from growing is to use a magnet over your glass once a day, I use a razorblade on glass tanks to scrape it off, just be careful and you will not scrape your glass.
Occasionally running a phosphate sponge (twice a month) will help remove the levels of phosphate that your test cannot measure.

Hey Lisa,
I've been doing good!! Tank is done cycling. I just picked up my first addition last Saturday. Got a peppermint shrimp. I know...going all out huh? Anyway, he found a hole in the rockwork and I hadn't seen him since. This morning I did a little snooping with the flashlight before the lights came on and sure enough, there he was just grazing away. I was really hoping he didn't find my one powerhead without a guard on it. I think we are going to add a clown the weekend after next. Our son is starting to get mad because he can't find the shrimp and he knows there is something in there somewhere.
Also, during my looksy this morning I spotted some HH. I counted at least 12 brittle stars sweeping around. I saw a 1 1/2" bristle worm and about a 1" flat worm running across the sand. So far I have about 200 dusters that came in on one rock and these tube things keep appearing on my sand. I have no idea what they are or where they are coming from. I'll put a link to the post...maybe you can figure it out. I also have started seeing tiny pods all over the glass and some nice sized pods on the rocks.
This is one exciting hobby!!

Very cool!! I love the way your tank kinda waves, and your rock work is awesome!! I can't wait to see it all set up with corals and fishies. Clown fish are a great place to start. I love mine. I've got all 3 of my fish eating right out of my fingers once or twice a week (when they get their Prime Reef treat). Cookie, my female perc actually nuzzles my fingers...she's incredibly cute!!
Did you ever find out if those things in the last picture were aptaisia? I'm not too sure it looks like that to me either, but who knows? I hope it isn't.
So what do you think of my algea situation? Weird, huh? My phosphate test comes out 0 or nearly 0, and I get this green stuff on my glass. It's really hard to scrape too. I've been taking equipment out once a week during water changes and scraping until me and the fish have just about had it, and it still doesn't look like I've gotten very far. Hmmm...
Here's what I found in my tank Monday evening...consensus of opinion is that it's a sponge, but there are still others who think it's a hitch hiker mushroom. Thing is, this rock has been in place since I started my tank...I would have thought a mushroom would have come out right away or died trying... I've got these posted in a couple of other threads, so I'm sure someone will say something about that...can't help it, I like to share...

Hello again,
I spent the weekend in Ohio visiting the inlaws. It is sad, I have withdrawls if I'm not looking at the fish boards for more than 3 days. Anyway, after the 5 day weekend...I came home to a not-so-clear tank. Looks like I have a few diatom blooms. Guess it is about time to get some snails. I also noticed a cube-like thing sitting on the sand. I asked the guy who was taking care of my cat if he put anything in there. He informed me that he dropped a piece of a tomato from his taco as he was looking over the top of the tank. Hopefully it didn't harm the pH any as I believe tomatos are acidic??? Anyway, I pulled that thing out real quick. It had about 200 pods on it so I would assume it wasn't lethal. I also have noticed many worms in the tank. At any one time you can see at least 6 worms running around in the sand. I also have a few big pieces of plate algae growing in there. It looks pretty cool so I'm not going to touch it yet. If it gets too big, I guess I'll cut it down.
Well, I think that is all that has happened over the weekend. I'm going to do some water tests once the little one goes to bed (he likes to play with the colored water). I'll post what they are a little later.

Looks like maroon calcareous algae to me Mona. I have it in the shadier parts of my tank (the very few shady parts lol). I really like the color that it adds to the rock. BTW, mine is on the oldest rock in my tank as well

Peppermint shrimp is cleaning like crazy in there. Will look into getting my first fish in the next couple weeks.
