I would like to do a "non-industry" ballast like you are going to do. What should i look for to make sure that i am getting the right type of ballast. I will probably be running a 175watt bulb.

ok here it goes..i used all pine wood, for weight issues that i had, i went to the lfs and they said that similar canopys made of hard woods weigh about 50 lbs or a bit more, mine weighs about 20 so that was an issue, i want a top that i can take off if i had to without pulling out my back, but hey you can use whatever ya want, the list of materials that you will need can all be picked up at home depot or lowes, here is the list. 100" of 1" by 12" board one piece must be at least 51 inches long, i bought an 8 foot board and then 1 48" board and it worked fine a piece of ply wood that is 20" by 51" its eslier to have home depot rip this stuff on their saw in the store. 3 pieces of 8 foot long 1" by 2" board. a piece of very thin sheet metal, i got the stuff in the roofing section, the stuff you put around vents under shingles on the roof, you need some wood screws that are 1 1/4" long, sheetmetal screws that are 1/4 inch long. (that was the hard one to find, i had to go to lowes to get those) either wood stain, or something to get the wood the color you want i t, i bought 2 cans of glossy spray paint and it looks great. and last a 7" fan from walmart, i got the kind that clips on something. that is all, well here it goes....to make this thing i have a picture of what it looks like, this guys plans are a bit messed up but you can get an idea of what it looks like

well the ply wood is the top the front door that swings out is 50 inches long, the 2 sides are 20" long...i used the 1" by 12" boards to make the sides and front, the back is open for cooling, the lights are 8 inches from the water, the canopy sits on the top of the tank, and there is a 1 1/2 inch overlap with the tank to support the canopy.....
1)cut one of the 1" by 12" boards to 50 inches
2)make 2 cuts from another of the 1" by 12" boards, you need to 2 pieces that are 20" long, so far you have 1 piece of 1" by 12" board that is 50"s and 2 pieces that are 20"s long,
3)take the 1" by 2" boards and cut them so that they are 19"s long you need 8 pieces that are 19"s long from the 1" by 2" boards,
4) mount these 1 1/2 inches from the botom on the 20" boards, see the website above for a picture, look at the sides of that canopy...you will see 1" by 2" boards mounted to the side of that canopy, i screwed 2 of these togeather, before i mounted them to the sides, this way i will have alot of surface area for the canopy to rest on, keep in mind that the wood will want to warp and bow b/c it will be kept humid and warm all the time....you will notice that the 1" by 2" boards are 19"s long and the sides are 20"s long, this is on purpose, b/c the front of the canopy will take up the other 1" ----in the middle of typing this i just got a call into work, ill conclude in the am tomorrow, this should get ya started, i apologize, btw those who have asked i fly for Comair Airlines...ill finish this soon sorry again
