Hey everyone, figured I'd come out of the shadows now. I've been following this board for awhile now and gathering info on starting a saltwater tank. Which I did today. I just finished mixing my water in a 55gallon. Put some CC in there (20lb) i also have 40 lb of live sand really to go in there but i should probably wait until my filter get here in the next day or two. So anyways, i'll probably start posting in here now.
Laters,

welcome aboard!! Will your tank be fish only or will it have coral? I just got into the saltwater hobby in Dec. I got a 12 gal. aquapod for Christmas and I love it!! It's very addicting. If I had more room I would get a bigger tank.

you could go ahead and throw it all in there before your filter, it could take a few days for the sand to settle anyway depending on how well you rinse it first, I rinsed mine like 10 times and had allmost no cloud

I went with the CC because it'll add substance, i've going to have a pretty thick base. 3" probably so i figured that i've put the CC down then some 1-2mm live sand then a layer of finer live sand and ofcourse 20lb of the CC was 10 bucks compared to 40 for the live sand.
My tank is going to have coral in it eventually. I'm going to get some live rock in either this week or next. I'm going to put the LR on the sides and have an open space in the middle of the tank of sand. I'm planning on a pair of clowns. Don't know which ones yet. And your standard cleaning crew. Plus feather dusters, cleaner clams, scollops, a few gobies. (hence a thick base of sand.) I love watching them dig. I like all the sand dwellers. I'm planning on 48" PC with 4x96watt lights. 2 dual daylight and 2 antics. So that should give me enough for a good amount of corals at 8watts per gallon.

i really dont know much about the CC debate. but what i have noticed is that in my live sand with shells. the sand all sifts down and leaves the shells on top. they then turn color and makes it unnatractive. i would assume the same will happen with the cc on the bottom. eventually it will work itself to the top. Just an FYI.
