hey guys and gals.. it's me agin.. like posted above.. i need some inspiration!!! i really like the guitar.. it's soo .. umm .. i dont even have a word for it.. but anyhow.. i wanted to learn it.. and i messed with it here and there.. but nothing like i should to ever get anywhere with one.. anyhow.. everytime i hear a song with some finger-picking it give me this crazy feeling.. ( because i know how figgin hard it is to do it.. so it's a extra umphh to the song )
but thats as far as it go..soo.. im my mind i wanna get at least decent at it.. but the actual act itself is another story.. soo i need a push.. well more of a shove to get me addicted to learning a guitar.. ( im pass the piont of calluses. and i already know what my comfy fingernail leght and such.. just need a inspiration to play..)
i like really melodic soothing songs.. like enya or enigma type song.. soo any idea??

You will learn more if you are challenged by a peer. Get a buddy who plays and learn together.
Tab helps. FInd your favorite song and disect it with the tab in front of you and your tape/cd player. I think I just about wore out the new version (Hell freezes over) of Hotel California trying to learn it. Love that INTRO!!

Actually, the best incentive to get "better" is to write your own stuff...!!
Seriously..learn a few riffs, a couple chord progressions and some basic scale stuff...the make up your "own" little ditty...
Play it , play it and play it till it becomes natural and easy..then record it...listen to it and see how "lame' it sounds...cool song, but really lame..
THAT's what's going to take you to the next level...you need to learn harmonic interface and key transfers, and then pick your way to a crecendo of an intro...
Then add in all the "tricks..double pick, triple pick, slide, bow and stretch...
Pretty soon your "Rockin" the house..
Anybody can "tab" their way thru Stairway to Heaven...but when you "interpret" and "improvise" not sight read, but "feel" your way thru the song...that's when people sit up and tke notice..
"Never heard stairway to Heaven played like "that" before..."

hum... i can read tabs... i love hotel california.. just that it's way over what i have... i just look at the tabs and i go dizzy.. and as for them strumming thing.. i really dont think strumming is fun.. it's kinda boring imo.. i just really like finger picking!!!!... but im way to slow and cant press my frets right... not to mention my stubby fingers.. but i do soo like guitars.. im just no good.. and thus leading me to not liking to practice... and for making a song.. um... i dont even know where to begin.. um.. maybe you guys know of a really goood finger picking song that is easy to learn....

You have to start somewhere. Pick a song that you can get in tab and give it a try. If it is a song you like, then you'll stick with it. Make sure you learn the WHOLE song (maybe skip the guitar solo if it is complicated). THen play along with a recording of it. This will help you get your chops down. SQuidd speaks of the next level . . . .
You must learn to walk before you can run. (Trust me on that-I have 5 kids.)

We had this same conversation a few months ago. What have you done since then? You need to spend some time learning the basics before you jump into finger picking or you are never going to get anywhere. Start slow and then move on from there.

dude...
Farmy is right, you gotta crawl before you can walk, walk before you can run, and run before you can fly...
if you are not practicing your scales, you dont need to worry bout 'finger pickin', may as well get to 'nose pickin' because if you dont practice, you'll never get to where you want to be.
when i started, i just sat down and turned on my MTV, back when they played good music, and watched the guitarists, then mimicked them... then found the notes.
there is so much stuff out there today that helps you learn guitar that its pathetic to me when i hear someone wanting to learn but says its too hard... hell, they have programs that'll practicaly play the damn thing for you!
scales.... learn what every note is on every fret of your neck, atleast up to the 12th fret anyway...
one thing that i use to do, to learn sounds and notes in my head, was i'd sit down... think of a commercial or tv jingle, and then find it on the neck. knowing some scales helped very much to do this, especialy learning what the "box" is. and then once i learned something, i had a great sense of accomplishment, and it fed my enthusiasim to learn other things and to practice.
set it down and walk away for a couple of days... then pick it back up this weekend.

Everyone learns differently. However, if you can find what challenges you (like a buddy or a great favorite song) then it will become easier to "stick with it."
BTW You will know when you're awake (sorta) at 3:00am asking yourself, "Was that a hammer on, hammer on, double-pick? or a hammer on, hammer on, pick-pull off?"
