Look at the first picture thats a durso, it is a standpipe that greatly quiets the noise, it raises the water level in the overflow box so there is less waterfall noise, and the designe gets rid of the sucking noise. As far prefilter, I don't use one. Everything flows though my system. The only filters I have are on my power heads. I have a little piece of filter sponge covering the intakes, that catches any free floating food, and I only have to clean them once a week, and it takes about 2 minutes.

Thats exactly what it is, It really does 2 things to quiet an overflow:
1. Raises the water level up so that there isnt a waterfall sound of water dropping 24" or more.
2. Makes the water intake underwater that removes the "flushing toilet" sound.
If you feel you need a prefilter there a mod for a durso standpipe:

LOL believe me I can't even keep up with the refugium sump business, The only reason why I am going to build one for you rane, is because I told my buddy here in town I would help him, so really building 3(2 for you 1 for him) is juat as easy as building 3. Plus I think richard durso would sue me, he sells them on his site(for an arm and a leg:D )

Broncofish,
I contacted Richard and asked him about me purchasing one and this is what he said
"Sorry, I only sell standpipes for internal overflow chambers. I don't do anything for the hang-on overflows. They are not my designs. I only show what other people have done to spark ideas. I can't sell other peopes designs."

I don't think Durso has a patent on it though, or atleast I have never seen a TM on his website anywhere.
Rane, you still haven't built one yet? :)
Man, it takes all of 10 minutes. No glue involed and only one pvc cut. However, I am not a fan of putting a ball valve in it though, I understand why it's done....but I don't want to limit the overflow at all, that could lead to a wet floor.
Sorry bronco if I am taking biz away from you, want a partner in it? You could build the standard size 'durso" and I could build the compact version that fits into slimline overflows........$$$$$$$$$$
 :D

I have all the parts for rane, I just need the height of the on the part outside the tank so I make it tall enough to silence the waterfall sound

I'M GOING TO PUT ONE IN MY OVERFLOW BUT WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF THE TEE FITTING ON THE TOP THAT'S CAPPED OFF. COULDN'T YOU USE ANOTHER 90 DEGREE ELBOW OR DO YOU NEED THAT SPACE IN THE TOP??

Rane: I need to know how how far is the water falling in the box, basicaly I will cut the pipe so it places the opening on the stand pipe only a couple of inches lower, this will give you a very minimal amount of water fall(see picture;) )
NYFisherman, you need the T with a cap. Drill a little hole in the cap, this will allow for air, adjust size of hole to lower gargling noise.
Josh believe not taking any business this is more of a favor, but If I ever get out of the refugium business, and into the standpipe business, I'll call you:D :D  :D

As promised here ya go, you'll only have like an 1" and 1/2 waterfall now, plus any gurgling noises should disapear.

Here is the hole up top. If it is to big, fill it in with super glue, and gradually poke a hole in the super glue with a toothpick. If it is to small take a drywall screw, and screw it is making it bigger as the screw goes in.
