I'm curious to the answer as well. After seeing this pic I have noticed quite a bit of the same thing in my tank. Rocks that were bright purple have little patches of it. I think mainly on the shaded side of the rocks.

THe pic I took was of some Black Algea. I don't know what could be what you are describing. Sorry. THe algea comes off the rock pretty easily, it's just a pain to keep reaching in and pulling rocks out to wash.

I took a closer look at this on my rock this weekend and it has developed lots of spikes. It is all over the place now. Could this be something bad?

I can't get a good pic, but I have what I believe is a sponge growing on a piece of rubble. It is a black "blob' w/ a little "spout" on it. Have a yellow one also growing at the back side of my open brain, neither are in the shade though.

I have had that all over my rock as well and assumed it was coraline. I would not worry about it being bad for you tank.
