Hello People, Does anybody own a phosphate reactor? Does anybody swear by it? How is the set up and maintenance? How where somebody's results? Im trying to IMPROVE my overall filtration and maybe cut down on some red algae as well. ANY FEEDBACK will be greatly appreciated before i invest. Its not that expensive and if the positives farly outweigh the negatives ill get one.. Kind Regards! P.S for anyone who has one,, what size tubing do you use and what size pump? i heard a small rio is good, i have a 30g reef.

i just put the media of that in my power filter, it does the similar talk of taking out phosphates and you dont have to buy the equipment

I have one - I really like it. I use it beside my sump though, not HOB. It's kinda a pain to replace the media, but you only need to do it every 3+ months normally. The build quality on it is really nice.
I use a small rio to power it... can't remember the exact one. I think it was a rio 90. The phosban reactor comes with a ball valve type deal to help you ajust the flow from it. The rio is tiny and pretty quiet... I like it.
I beleive I used 1/2 flex tubing and a couple of those cheap plastic hose clamps to make me feel better. I'm not a fan of flex tubing and really would like an alternative that bends a little easier. If anybody has any ideas let me know - I already soaked it and 'molded' it in hot water.
Overall though, I really like the product. I think with the media, shipping, plumbing, and all, it came to about $70 with extra media. Good investment IMO

If you are using GFO, you must fluidize it in a special media chamber for best results. Otherwise it becomes a solid brick and you reduce the surface area for po4 to bind with.
Also... if you've never used GFO before, start out with small amounts and work your way up. Too much, too soon will bleach your tank.
3rd... rinse it until the waste water becomes clear. If you dont rinse it, GFO dust can get into your display. Then it will irritate any coral it lands on and even cause necrosis on some corals.
Good luck.

Hmmm... I wonder... that might actually be the reason for my mysterious random rasta leather death.... I never even thought of that. I had a couple problems one time I reloaded it I didn't pay attention and rinse it enough.
To rinse it out, I normally just take the power head and put it in a bucket with fresh water running in it and let it just run until the water clears up.
