welcome aboard,
best LFS i don't know of any in NY from NJ
I would start with a min of 55 it will offer you good stability with the water parameters but by all means get bigger if u can, your best bet will be going with a 4" DSB of live sand and a min of 1 lb of live rock per gallon of tank size this should get you started rember you will have to let your tank cycle before adding any fish approx 4 weeks the best thing you can do is go to your local book store and get a couple of good books pref ones that have only been in print 1 or 2 years most flip through them and if they talk about live rock then you know it is atleast current with modern techniques of filters
this is just to get you started i am sure you will get alot more responses just keep asking questions 1,2 or 10 a day until you understand what your doing before you do it good luck and welcome aboard

Go to New World Aquarium 204 East 38th ST. (646) 865-9604 its on 38th and 3rd on the south east corner, its the best store in the city you will see what i mean as soon as you walk in, what ever you do go slow and this is not a cheap hobby.

Be careful with your 29 gallon, the less water that is in your tank the more easily your conditions can change. I know its only 50$ now but you might wanna spend the extra 50$ and get the 55 gallon, I gaurantee that it will save you some headaches in the future.

i know that petland usually has 55 gal tanks on sale .. tank and stand for like 88 bucks .not to sure on the price of the hoods though

Generally that is discouraged... if you have a huge tank, you might be able to get away with it. But as a gerneral rule, no, it won't work. They are too similar and will fight.

I made that mistake a couple of weeks ago and ended up losing the Purple. (figures the most expensive one would die) LFS told me it would be OK. My instincts told me to do more research, but my wife really wanted the purple and I gave in. Live and learn.
