I'd be more concerned about the other contaminates in your water. Have you tested for anything else? How high is the calcium?

The local water company has tested the water and said that it is safe(should i test it myself) the calcium level runs about 175 to 225 ppm. If i test myself what should i test for besides the standard? Ammoni, Nitrite, Nitrate.

Water company says its safe for people to drink. For fish, it might not be that safe. Best thing to do is get yourself a decent TDS meter. Your going to want to test for alkalinity and phosphate. There are lots of other contaminates also. Things like chlorine, copper, iron, etc. that you do not want to introduce into a SW tank. I would highly recommend getting an RO/DI unit to filter your water.

Too high calcium can cause too low alk and problems with ph...should be useing ro/di filtered fresh water source with a quality salt mix for makeing sea water.

Okay, I too have high calcium...off the chart on my pharmaceutical tests. pH is 8.4, amm 0, trates 0, trites0, sg 1.025. My tank was started in Dec 06, I use safe water, have green star polyps for last two months with no problems, few fish, etc. I haven't had anything die other than the durn blue leg hermits killing off others for the shells. So what is the opinion here? When will the purple arrive?
