High nitrates

My nitrate level is at 40. I did a water change but that didn't help any. What else do you do for high nitrates? <img src="graemlins//confused.gif" border="0" alt="[confused]" />

if your nitrates are that high I might suggest a 50% water change then wt. 24 hrs check your levels again then if needed do another 50% change
thats my opinion.

26 Gallon tank - what's in it? They may have something to do with it.
What kind of water are you adding? Some municipal water supplies have nitrates in them already.
What kind of filtration? If your filter is dirty it will feed the nitrates.
If none of those are the cause, there is a product called "algone" that works very nicely.
It is biological and not chemical. Simply place one of the packets on your filter.

Right now in my tank I have 2 cleaner shrimp, 1 peppermint shrimp, 2 camel back shrimp and an anemone. For water I am using distilled water, abd I just bought a new bio wheel wet dry filter.
What else could be causing the nitrates?

Was ready to ask the same question as Alan (specifically age of tank). Also what and how often to you feed? There shouldn't be much of a bioload in the tank, so overfeeding could be the source.
Also, please provide some detail on your filter system (undergravel / hang on / cannister). What you are using in it.

Darn small tank syndrome. Thats the problem. A 26 gallon tank can turn on you very quickly. With the critters that you described in your tank I wouldn't believe that animal waste is the problem. I'd go with the over feeding thought. What do you feed and how often?
Its just my opinion but I wouldn't do the 50% water change that was suggested earlier. 50% seems rather extreme.

My tank is 5 months old, I made the mistake of buying the anemone I should have waited longer, but the anemone is doing really great.
I have a hang on filter with a DSB. I feed every other day brine shrimp or blood worms. I only put as much as the shrimp can eat.

Any downside to DSB? I have CC now. why would DSB help with nitrates but not CC? Would a sandbed of 2 inches help or has to be 3 or more? Would a jawfish upset anything?

my lfs just suggested a protein skimmer, said it would take care of the nitrate problem. Would it? How noisy are they in comparison to a filter? Tank is in bedroom....
