Hi,
When I got my Hippo tang he was no bigger than my pinky nail. I have had him for about 8 months now. He is the size of my hand.
They are very gentle and don't bother other fish at all. I did have a wierd one that ate coral, I traded him in for another fish. I got another Hippo 8 months ago as a freebee. He was sooo tiny!
I was told you can have only one per tank, but I have seen pictures of people with two or three.

They grow pretty fast and like lots of room to swim around and graze on the rocks. They will eat anything green on the rocks but hair algea. I also feed him frozen algea cubes.
My grandchildren call him the Dori fish.

i love my hippo tang. she's almost the size of my hand right now and enjoys every square inch of my tank when she's out. she is a little shy and love's hanging out in her caves. when i add new fish to the tank she shows her dominance in the tank but nothing too aggressive. she's never hurt another fish. after a day she doesnt even seem to notice that the new arrivals are new and just does her thing.

not in your small reef tank. like all tangs, they really require 6 feet of lateral swimming room.

Not sold, given away. I think the guy figured it was to tiny to survive, he must of had babies or something. It was a freebee. He is a treasure, so beautiful and hardy.

no, it will be going into our large tank. Were just brainstorming and planning for the large tank, instead of making the same dottyback/damsel/wrasse mistake

Mine is not aggressive at all. He was about the size of a quarter when I got him. Also, very tiny. (Not as tiny as a fingernail, I would have loved to see that!) He is actually very shy and has a specific hiding place that he goes to. I really like him.
I feed him seaweed strips, mysis, and the occasional pellet food soaked in vitachem.
My advice is to make sure you QT a hippo tang. I know you should QT all fish, but this fish in particular is EXTREMELY prone to ich. Check out the disease section of the board, there is always a thread about hippos and ich.

Our Hippo is our favorite fish. We have him in with 2 marroon clowns and from time to time we will find them "chasing" each other around the tank kinda like dogs will do around a kitchen table. We recently added a six-line and our female clown would charge it and the tang would actually get inbetween kinda like breaking them up.
Also it has it's own "garage" that it sleeps in. And if it gets scared or when the lights go out it swims as fast as it can and flies into his "garage". Fish has alot of personality.

My LFS sells them for $30. I won't buy them though. I just have a bad feeling that I would get the sick one. I don't do well with tangs.
