Hi, i have recently bought a baby hippo tang and now its in my main tank. Its doing okay in my tank and it already started eating on the first night. But now when i take a closer look at the tang, i noticed that it is only breathing through one of its gills while the other one hardly opens at all and its breathing heavily. Is something wrong with my fish or is this normal for it to happen? Also, the colour of my hippo tang around the mouth area appears to be pale, almost white. The fish behaviour is normal for a hippo tang and its eating but the only problem is the two i have stated above. Could somebody please tell me if there is a problem with the fish or isit due to stress or something? Thanks for taking your time to read this i hope you can reply asap. :)

I'm still trying to get my camera to work but its definitely not ich because there isn't any signs or symptoms of it.

give it time. small hippos hv a very low survival rate. they need to eat 2-3x per day. if it survives the 2-3 months, then it should do fine.

Ich starts in lungs. His gills could be infected so its producing mucus which is causing the gill not to open up correctly. Fresh water dips would clear that out. Remember, regals are notorious ich magnets.

did u say lungs? i dont think fish hv lungs, i think u meant gills? but like i said, give it some time to observe. its better to wait and see then jump into conclusion.

I'd hypo it.
Stressed fish, especially ones that have issues breathing can be helped a lot by hypo and if it is ich and it's in its gills, waiting could cause its death that much quicker.
As stated above, small Blue Hippos have a terribly low survival rate in captivity.
If it were me, I'd quarantine it, hypo it, offer seaweed/algae strips tied to a rock with a rubber band and on a seaweed clip. I'd observe it in the QT and wait hope for the best. If things got worse, then I'd do more researching, but doing nothing will more than likely lead to its death.

Don't bother with algae, juvenile Hippos are not herbivores. Give it some mysis dipped in vitamins. And yeah, I mean gills. Wait and see approach with sick fish is usually death of the fish. Imagine if you are in Er and your doc says:" I will wait and see before I do anything". Observe it like crazy. My guess stays the same. Gill infection caused by a parasite, since its a regal, I would say ich.

The size and condition of the fish I'd be nervous moving it around more than I needed and doing dips with such a small fish -- especially as they have a low survival rate to begin with. As cute as they are it's still best to buy them around the 3" size vs the small thumbnail size. Do what you can but don't have high expectations.

I'm not suggesting a dip, I'm suggesting a QT tank in hypo. It's probably too late for this fish, as it is with most small hippos, but can't just sit around and do nothing. More than likely it's ich or some other parasite in it's gills and it'll eventually die.
It should be illegal to sell hippo tangs smaller than 3".

Hi, firstly i would like to say thanks to all the people who have posted on this thread.About my regal tang, I actually wanted to give it a freshwater dip and place it into my QT but it was quite late into the night so i thought doing it tomorrow morning would be better but when i woke up the next day i noticed that its white spots have lessened by alot and its breathing was slightly better. So i decided to just leave it alone and see how it went and to my great pleasure i would like to say that it has made a full recovery and is grazing on some algae in my tank and would eat just about anything i feed it. Also, it no longer hides in my LR and is swimming around my tank happily and i even saw it letting my skunk cleaner shrimp do its job. So thanks for all the help and advice you all have given me it has greatly helped me understand what should i do if i ever see sighs of ich appearing on any of my fishes next time. Thanks alot =D

The ich is still there fyi. Good Luck
Yeah. Ich doesn't just go away. The mature parasites drops off and then each bug releases a lot more of the parasites. You really need to do research about parasites and their life cycle; its vital for long term success in this great hobby (IMO). Scroll down this thread for some good info on ich & treatment:

I wish they'd take these baby Regal (Hippo, showing my age) off the market, I know of one big online dealer that is, their survival rate is awful.

Wait, was it ich spots or stress spots of discoloration?
I'm still inclined to believe that this fish has ich and is just fighting off signs of it a little bit better for the time being.
Not to be the bearer of bad news, but usually they'll seem to get better for a few days and then the parasite will kill the fish.
