Just an update for those that wrote to me about the purple tang with HLLE...he's doing SUPER. Its been 2 months now, and I've put a before and after photo together for you guys to see. The photo is him in just about the same position in front of the same rock in both photos. Kudos to the Ecosystem!

Tangs will get HLLE, as will other fish, as a result of poor water quality, rough handling...stress.
We were given this tang by a LFS when we mentioned that we could cure the HLLE in our tank. The manager of the store figured the fish was a goner, so he gave him to us (we're pretty steady customers). I'm afraid to show him the photos, he may want 40 bucks!

So tell us what you did to effect a cure. That is a remarkable improvement there. The fish looks like he's on death's door in one photo, and perfectly fine in the other.
Good job!

I've read a lot of claims that Ecosystem was able to reverse the effects of HLLE, and now I see picture proof. Simply amazing.
Is that all you did to get the amazing turn around - go to the Ecosystem set-up?

Well...here's the thing about it. I have been in contact with Bob Smith at Ecosystem, and he says the same thing I'll tell you here -- we're not sure WHY the ecosytem filtration setup cures HLLE, but it does. This is the third fish we've cured of this disease, but the purple tang is by far the most rapid and dramatic improvement.
As an experiment, we set up a 15 gallon hex tank with a small ecosystem setup and nothing else. We added a flame angel we were given with bad HLLE. In about 3 months, we gave him back to the owner completely cured. I'm not sure if its the mud, but that would be my guess.
To answer your question Beth, its really nothing other then placing the fish in an ecosystem filtrated tank. I wish I could claim some magic touch, but thats it!
We have a quaratine/hyposalinity tank that we use for new arrivals and/or sick fish, and we put a small homemade ecosystem filter on it. We haven't lost anyone since we started doing it, I highly recommend it.
Great stuff!

My guess would be that it is the overall natural polishing that the eco does. If you have zero trates, phates, etc. then you can claim excellent water quality. I've always felt that that is what is needed to maintain healthy tangs. This can also be accomplished with macros and LS refugiums, or, like my tank--a natural system where LR and a DSB, in addition to macros, are the main filters in the system.

He's in the reef tank Bob...which was an adventure, since we had to move the scopus out of there to make room for him. We put the scopus in the big tank, where he's very happy, and theres enough room in there (with the dual territories set up) that the yellow tang doesn't seem to mind. Yet. We'll see.
