hob filter with surface skimmer

have had an off and on problem with surface film that my powerheads are not solving. was browsing thru a catalog and saw a hob filter with built on surface skimmer. has anyone tried one of these? i hate to waste money if it doesnt work.

yeah it works, but I will say that if you run the $10 surface skimmer on a 75gallon tank you may not get the best results... on my old 20long setup the $10 hagen surface skimmer hooked up to an aquaclear power head got rid of film in less than 30 minutes.. definitely not a waste of money on smaller tanks.
p.s. it'll work on a HOB aquaclear too.

may want to make an intake overflowbox out of acrylic or plastic that feeds into the intake of a powerhead below it. Just don't let the water level drop too much from evap (I don't know if you have an auto topoff or not) or else the pump may run dry and break.
The $10 surface skimmer attachment may work for you.. you never know.

to get the best effect for your 55 you should probably go with a larger overflow.
