HOB Refugium w/ Skimmer

ok i've been wondering how does the skimmer part of this type of refugium work?

is your skimmer before the fuge?is this a dyi or did you buy it what is the make

its a cpr hang on back and yes the skimmer is before the fuge...i went to my lfs and asked if i needed a stronger pump for it but he told me that whatever it came with (250gph) should be fine and to just give it a week or so...i just recently set it up on february 6...

They are correct. The protein skimmer needs a breakin period where the inside acutally gets a "scum" lining on it. During the breakin you may get some skimmate but usually just a clear water. As the time goes on you will see the water starting to color up a bit until it really starts to do it's job.
