Larger tanks are build to include internal overflows, this would mean that there are normally two holes drilled in one or maybe two corners of the tank. These two holes are for drain and one for return. The water flows into the overflow and drains down a standpipe to the sump or wet/dry, where it can be filtered by many means, floss, bio balls, skimmer, carbon.. the it is returned via return pump up the other hole,. that would be plumbed and back into the main tank.

Oh no, nothing to do with the plumbing on the house. Although some of the people on here have more PVC on their fish tank than they do running throughout their house!!

No, it all depends on how big you are looking to go. I just got my 90G and I'm just getting a canister. It wont look as good because I'll have a skimmer hanging off the back of the tank but I'm pressed for space. There are many different ways to go about setting up a filter as you will read in the threads. It just depends on what you want to keep in the tank and how much you are willing to spend.
