Use of products like amquel can also result in false readings with some test kits.
Didn't you say that your ammonia was high before the new clown died? So then it wouldn't be from moving rocks. You sure no inverts died? You positive the system is all functioning correctly? All prefilters clean, all filters clean and running correctly? What is your pH reading?
FWIW, I worked in an LFS with a 7 day return on fish. But if the ammonia was at .5, we wouldn't have given credit. Water quality issues are not the fault of the store.

it is now a week later since everything went down.
ammonia is stil at .5, the ammonia remover i used for 2 days got it down to .25, but it went back up again when i removed it.
several of my nails died a while ago, might that be the cause of the ammonia? also, my ph refuses to rise. when the tank was populated, it had it up to 8.2, but now that there is just housekeeping, its stuck at 7.8
my starfish is still acting weird, but he seems to be returning to normal. he doesnt bury himself as much as he used to, and he just lays on the surface of the sand, but every time i check, he's moved to a different spot.
1 have 1 snail left, 5 hermits, and the starfish.
this was everything as of yesterday
temp= 80
ammon= .5
trite=0
trate=10
sg=1.023
over the past week, i have swapped 30 out of 40 gallons.
im just going to let the tank revive itself on its own.
im also getting a nasty algae outbreak, but that was to be expected

You are definitely sure that the flow and pumps are all working correctly? What sort of filter do you have?
