Sorry to hear about the loss, best of luck to the other idol. He looks great. Also, great aquascaping, I like the look with the big opening in the middle.

Sorry to here you lost one. Glad the others are doing good. I read the they school as juvies but are very aggressive as the grow up and may be a problem with your other fish. Hopefully since you got him small he'll be good.

My Favorite fish. Too chicken to try though. I'm planning on banner butterfly fish down the road.

Hey Crimzy,
sorry to hear about one of your MI's. I want to thank you for sharing your experience with these beautiful fish. You've inspired me to try one! I went fishing last week wed and caught 1 juvi MI. One of my other friends who I went fishing with decided to catch and try two. So far mine is doing ok. He seems to be grazing well and today I saw him eat some frozen brine shrimp and try some flakes. My friend told me both his MI's are eating frozen brine as well. Both of his are in a 90 gal by themselves and have no tank mates. I am keeping my fingers crossed, but so far they seem happy.

Sorry about your loss. It is great to hear that the other is eating. It sounds like the hard part is over. You got him eating with other aggressive eaters. My ray monopolized the majority of all food that went into my tank too!!
It seems as though the remaining ray is adjusting to tank life just fine.
Good luck.
Oh yeah Btw your tank is stunning
!! It has all my favorites in it.

I'm really sorry and good luck with the 2nd one.
This may be innapropriate and you don't have to answer which i completely understand, but how much did your entire tank cost including fish??
I have a 46 gal (this is my very 1st tank) and it's cost me probably about 1200$ not including the tank and stand which were a gift. (which is why i am currently dead broke)
I could only imagine how must you must have spent.
i intend on having a tank like yours like 10 yrs down the line. it is amazing.
again, feel free to ignore my question if you don't want to say

I don't have a problem with that question. As an estimate, I'd say the setup probably cost about $5K, give or take a few hundred. I buy a lot of things used and I look for deals. The rock would be expensive but I generally buy that from other hobbiests breaking down their systems and a lot has accumulated over time.

Wow. that is a lot cheaper than i expected. As i said, this is my 1st tank so i was anxious and didnt' bargain shop so the equipment alone cost about 450, then 200 for 45lbs of LR.
$5000 is pretty damn good if you ask me.

Bump.
Hey Crimzy... how's the second Idol doing? Still eating well, we hope?

It's doing great. While I would never use the term, "success", until a year or more has passed, the idol is among the healthiest, happiest fish in my tank. It never hides, eats like a pig, and it's colors are excellent. Things have gone as well as I could have hoped so far with this one. I've had him for almost 6 weeks now.
The next test will be to see how the idol does when I add another fish to the tank, and disrupt the stability. I plan on adding something in the next couple of weeks so we'll see then.
I'll post some pics next time I scrape the algae, which should be in a couple days.

Excellent -- glad he's still doing well. What will you be adding next?

I'm still debating among a blue dot ray, some large tang, or a large copperband butterfly (starting to develop an aptasia issue).

dude, i still say go with the blue spot, those rays are gorgeous and it would make a stunning addition to your tank along with your yellow ray

I take it your Idol is doing fine??
He is doing fine... but he's not mine anymore. I added a blue dot ray and the idol decided that he was going to kill the ray, if I let him. I found him a home in a 500 gallon reef. But I have kept in contact with the new owner and he is doing great still, eating everything in sight.
It's unfortunate as I loved having him. But it came down to him or my rays...

so whats next for this tank? a dussumier i hope..

I think it will likely be a Duss. But they are not easy to find. There is a large, beautiful Vlamingi going for a great price at a LFS near me. But I'll try to find the Duss first.
